Overview
The Volkswagen Tiguan is VW's compact crossover SUV, sold in Canada since the 2009 model year, so it has no earlier history here. The first generation was a German-built five-seater with a 200 hp turbocharged 2.0 L. The second, sold from 2018 to 2024, was a longer Mexican-built model with an optional third row, and the third arrived for 2025 as a five-seater with more power. It suits buyers who want a European-feeling compact SUV with a turbo engine and all-wheel drive, and every Tiguan sold new in Canada since the 2022 model year has 4MOTION. For Calgary owners, the things worth checking on a used one are the timing chain on 2009–2012 models, open recalls such as the corrosion-related steering rack bolt on 2018 models, and the oil consumption owners report on 2021–2023 models.

Third generation
2025 on
The North American third generation is a five-seat model built in Puebla, closely related to the Chinese-market Tayron L rather than the European Tiguan. It uses a 201 hp turbocharged 2.0 L with an 8-speed automatic and standard 4MOTION in Canada, and a 268 hp Highline Turbo R-Line was added for 2026.[1][2][12][13]

Second generation (AD/BW)
2018–2024
North America received only the long-wheelbase body, built in Puebla, Mexico, with a 184 hp turbocharged 2.0 L and an 8-speed automatic. A 2022 update brought new styling, standard LED lights and a digital gauge cluster, and in Canada every 2022–2024 Tiguan came with 4MOTION.[1][7][10][11]

Launched in Canada for 2009 and imported from Germany, with a 200 hp turbocharged 2.0 L, a 6-speed manual on front-drive Trendline models or a 6-speed automatic, and optional 4MOTION all-wheel drive. Canada kept selling this generation through the 2017 model year.[1][3][4][6]

Timing chain system on the 2.0 L turbo
Class actions alleged that the timing chain system on EA888 engines could fail and damage the engine. A settlement approved by Ontario and Quebec courts in 2020 covers 2009–2012 Tiguans first sold or leased in Canada, with an extended warranty and repayment of eligible past repairs.[14]

Fuel pump stall recall
Under Transport Canada recall 2014-307, deposits could build up on the fuel pump connections and weaken the pump, which can stall the engine. Dealers update the software to raise fuel pump pressure.[15]

Steering wheel clock spring and driver airbag light
Transport Canada recall 2015-344 covers clock springs that could tear, cutting the driver airbag connection and turning on the airbag light. Dealers fit a new cover and replace the clock spring if the light is on. Owners have since reported clock springs failing again after the recall, taking the horn and steering wheel controls with them.[16][19]

Rear coil spring recall
Under Transport Canada recall 2019-116, the rear coil springs may not have been made properly and could break, which can damage a rear tire. Dealers replace both rear springs and check the tires.[17]

Corroded steering rack mounting bolt
Transport Canada recall 2026-439 covers 2018 Tiguans where a bolt holding the steering rack to the subframe could corrode and break, which could crack the rack housing and cause a loss of steering control. Dealers replace the right-side steering rack bolt.[18]

Oil consumption and oil separator failures
Owners have reported high oil consumption, repeated low-oil warnings between changes and failed PCV valves or oil separators on 2021–2023 Tiguans; in some reports the dealer replaced the cylinder head. Oil consumption comes up in dozens of NHTSA owner complaints for these model years, most of them for 2022.[20][21][22]

Issue, risk and remedy
Issue. On certain vehicles, a software problem could cause the body control module (BCM) to reset while driving. As a result, the ignition could switch off and cause a loss of power to the wheels. It could also cause a loss of certain controls, warning lights, malfunction tell-tales and rearview camera system.
Safety risk. A loss of power to the wheels, exterior lights that don't work, and/or controls, warnings and tell-tales that don't display could increase the risk of a crash. A rearview camera image that doesn't display could reduce a driver's ability to see behind the vehicle while backing up, which could also increase the risk of a crash.

Issue, risk and remedy
Issue. On certain vehicles, the wiring for the passenger occupant detection system (PODS) may not have been manufactured properly. This could cause the airbag system to turn off the passenger-front airbag even when a passenger is seated. Note: This problem would cause an error message to display on the instrument panel and a warning chime to sound. The airbag indicator light would also display "passenger airbag off".
Safety risk. An airbag that is turned off could increase the risk of injury to a passenger in a crash.
Corrective action. Volkswagen advises that you shouldn't use the front passenger seat if a PODS error message displays on the instrument panel or if the airbag indicator light displays "passenger airbag off" with an occupant in the seat. Volkswagen will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to repair the passenger-front seat wiring harness.

Issue. This recall is for accessory rear hatch spoilers that were installed on a new vehicle or sold as an accessory part at a Volkswagen dealership. On certain vehicles, the rear spoiler might not be properly attached to the hatch. As a result, the spoiler could detach from the vehicle while driving.

Issue. On certain vehicles, the rear suspension coil springs may not have been properly manufactured and could break over time. This could cause damage to a rear tire, resulting in rapid air loss and/or tire failure.
Safety risk. A rear tire failure could affect vehicle control. Additionally, a broken coil spring could also create a road hazard for other motorists. Both of these conditions may increase the risk of a crash.
Corrective action. The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to have both of the rear axle coil springs replaced. If a broken coil spring is found, the rear tires should be inspected for damage and replaced as required.

Issue, risk and remedy
Issue. Certain vehicles do not to conform to Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 114 - Theft Protection and Rollaway Prevention. Due to incorrect programming, the vehicle may fail to provide an audible warning when a driver opens their door after turning off the ignition, and the key is left in the ignition switch. This could increase the risk of vehicle theft.

Issue. On certain vehicles, a front lower ball joint nut may be loose or improperly tightened. This could result in a dislocation of a lower ball joint, which could affect steering, traction or stability of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.
Corrective action. Dealers will replace the lower ball joint nut (ball joint to wheel bearing housing/”steering knuckle”) on one or both sides of the vehicle and clean the threads in the ball joint if necessary. Note: In the interim, owners are advised to stop driving their vehicle until the defect has been repaired. Affected owners should call Volkswagen's Roadside Assistance number at 1-800-411-6688 to arrange to have the vehicle towed to the nearest dealer for repair.

Issue. On certain vehicles, a lower loop of a rear shock absorber may separate and detach from its base cup due to an incorrect weld. If a separation were to occur, it could affect vehicle stability and increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.

Issue. Certain vehicles may fail to comply with the requirements of CMVSS 108 - Lighting System and Retroreflective Devices. The back-up lights within the tail light assemblies do not meet the photometric requirements of the standard.

Issue, risk and remedy
Issue. On certain vehicles, the ESC warning light may not remain on if a fault was detected on the previous key cycle. Instead, the warning light does not turn on until the vehicle starts to move. Canadian regulations require that the ESC warning light must turn on when the vehicle is started (under these conditions). Note: This problem can only happen if there is a fault related to the power steering system. The power steering warning light would stay on to advise that there is a fault with the steering system.
Safety risk. This small error does not affect vehicle safety.
Corrective action. This is not a recall. The company has made changes to the vehicle software to correct this issue on all new vehicles.

Issue. On certain vehicles, the airbag control unit may contain a defective capacitor. If the capacitor fails, it could result in a deployment of the airbags and/or seat belt pretensioners without a crash. This could also cause the airbag system to not deploy in the event of a crash.
Safety risk. Airbags or seat belt pretensioners that deploy without a crash could create a risk of injury and also increase the risk of a crash. Airbags that do not deploy in a crash could create an increased risk of injury.
Corrective action. The company will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their vehicle to a dealer to have updated airbag control unit software installed and, if necessary, the airbag control unit will be replaced.

Issue. On certain vehicles, the driver frontal airbag inflator could produce excessive internal pressure during airbag deployment. Increased pressure may cause the inflator to rupture, which could allow fragments to be propelled toward vehicle occupants, increasing the risk of injury. This could also damage the airbag module, which could prevent proper deployment. Failure of the airbag to fully deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of personal injury to the seat occupant.
Corrective action. Dealers will replace the front driver airbag inflator. Note: This campaign only affects the Audi A5 and Audi S5 Cabriolet models.

Failure of either of the seat-mounted airbags to fully deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of personal injury to the seat occupant.
Corrective action. Dealers will replace the affected driver and/or passenger seat side airbag modules with new production modules.

Issue, risk and remedy
Issue. On certain vehicles, the steering wheel clock spring could become contaminated with long hair or long fibers which may cause a displacement of the internal guide loops. When the guide loops are dragged out of position, they may apply tension to the internal flat cable and cause it to tear. Should the cable tear, the electrical connection to the driver's front airbag may be lost, causing the airbag monitoring indicator light to illuminate. Failure of the driver's airbag to deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of personal injury to the seat occupant.
Corrective action. Dealers will install a cover of a different design to help prevent clock spring contamination caused by hair or other fibers. In instances where the vehicle has an airbag light on (and diagnosis confirms the steering wheel clock spring requires replacement), dealers will install a new steering wheel clock spring.

Issue. Certain vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 120 - Tire Selection and Rims. The certification label is missing the recommended tire pressure information. Also, incorrect gross vehicle weight rating / gross axle weight rating information may have been printed on the label. This could lead to tire underinflation and/or vehicle overloading, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.
Corrective action. Dealers will apply a revised label.

- Every Tiguan sold new in Canada since the 2022 model year has 4MOTION all-wheel drive; until 2021 a front-drive Trendline was offered.[2][9][10]
