    Issue. Volkswagen Group Canada is conducting a parts recovery campaign targeting 2012-2016 Volkswagen vehicles equipped with a TDI (diesel) engine built between May 25, 2011 and June 1, 2016. The auxiliary heater elements are being recovered to aid in Volkswagen's analysis in support of Transport Canada defect investigation file no. 3280-15-10. Note: This action is not being conducted under the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. For the 2016 model year Jetta, only the Jetta Hybrid model is involved in this parts recovery program.

    Safety risk. No safety defect has been identified with these auxiliary heater elements.

    Corrective action. Volkswagen will notify owners by mail and advise them to take their vehicle to a dealership to replace the auxiliary heater element at no charge.

    Issue. On certain vehicles, a build-up of silicate on the shift lever switch could cause the transmission to detect that it is in the Park position when it isn't. This could allow the ignition key to be removed when the transmission is not in the Park position. If the parking brake is not applied, this could allow the car to roll away.

    Safety risk. If the transmission position is not displayed correctly, a user may not know that the vehicle is not in the PARK position. If the parking brake is not applied, this could create a risk of a vehicle roll-away and increase the risk of a crash.

    Corrective action. The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to have a new shift lever micro switch and control unit installed.

On certain vehicles, the camshaft lobe which actuates the vacuum pump may fail, causing the pump to fail to deliver further vacuum supply to the brake booster, potentially increasing stopping distances. Note: This issue would result in the Engine Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) illuminating.

    Corrective action. Dealers will update the engine control module (ECM) software.

    Issue. On certain vehicles, an electro-magnetic coil inside the Passenger Occupant Detection System (PODS) control module was manufactured with improper insulation between the coil layer. This could result in the failure of the PODS control module, or misclassification of the front passenger seat occupant, which could prevent proper passenger airbag deployment during a crash where deployment is warranted, potentially increasing the risk of injury to the front passenger seat occupant.

    Corrective action. Dealers will replace the PODS control module. Note: Should this occur, vehicle occupants would be alerted of a problem by the airbag monitoring light illuminating or by a false indication of the Passenger Airbag OFF indicator.

    Issue. On certain vehicles, the steering wheel clock spring could become contaminated with long hair or long fibers which may cause a displacement of the internal guide loops. When the guide loops are dragged out of position, they may apply tension to the internal flat cable and cause it to tear. Should the cable tear, the electrical connection to the driver's front airbag may be lost, causing the airbag monitoring indicator light to illuminate. Failure of the driver's airbag to deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of personal injury to the seat occupant.

    Corrective action. Dealers will install a cover of a different design to help prevent clock spring contamination caused by hair or other fibers. In instances where the vehicle has an airbag light on (and diagnosis confirms the steering wheel clock spring requires replacement), dealers will install a new steering wheel clock spring.

The software within the control module of the halogen headlights can allow the low beam headlights to turn off when the high beam headlights are activated, which is contrary to the requirements of the standard. Reduced lighting at the front of the vehicle can affect the driver's vision, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.

This could cause the seatback to shift fore and/or aft with minimal effort. Should this movement occur unexpectedly with the driver's seatback, it could startle the driver and lead to a crash. In a crash, if the movement occurs on either seat, this could increase the risk of personal injury to the driver and/or front passenger occupant.

    Corrective action. Dealers will inspect the seatback recliner retaining bracket, and if found out of specification, it will be corrected.

On certain vehicles, if the rear axle trailing arms are damaged in a rear or side-rear impact crash and a repair facility does not correctly diagnose or replace damaged rear axle components, rear trailing arm durability could be reduced, which could result in a sudden fracture of the trailing arm. This could lead to a loss of vehicle control, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.

    Corrective action. Dealers will install a sheet metal inlay on both rear axle trailing arms. The inlay is designed to help prevent the sudden loss of vehicle control should a rear axle trailing arm fracture occur if undiagnosed/unrepaired damage exists from a previous rear or side-rear impact/crash.

These vehicles were inadvertently equipped with a Daytime Running Light (DRL) system that can be deactivated. A loss of DRL illumination could render the vehicle less visible to other motorists and to pedestrians during daylight hours, possibly resulting in a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury.

    Issue. On certain vehicles, the converter box is protected by the same fuse as the horn and the anti-theft alarm system. If the fuse is blown, the converter box would be disconnected from the power supply which, in turn, shuts off applications such as the engine management system, lighting system, and wipers. Should this occur while the vehicle is being driven, the engine would stall and the headlamps and wipers would turn off unexpectedly. Engine stalling would result in lost propulsion which, in conjunction with traffic and road conditions, and the driver's reactions, could increase the risk of a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. As well, loss of headlamp illumination and windshield wiping capability, should it occur during a rainy/snowy day, or during hours of darkness, could compromise the driver's ability to see the road and its users.

    Corrective action. Dealers will separate the wiring for the horn and the theft protection horn from the power supply of the converter box, and route the wires to separate fuses.

On certain Audi A3, TT, TT Roadster, and Volkswagen EOS, Golf wagon, GTI, Jetta and Jetta wagon equipped with a Direct-Shift Gearbox (DSG), the wiring harness of a temperature sensor in the DSG may have connector wires that were insufficiently crimped during assembly. As such, the temperature sensor could falsely detect a high gearbox oil temperature, causing the transmission to abruptly shift to the Neutral position. A loss of propulsion, in conjunction with traffic and road conditions, and the driver's reactions, could increase the risk of a crash causing personal injury or death.

    Corrective action. Dealers will reprogram the transmission control module with updated software..

    Issue. On certain vehicles, driveshaft cover plate screws may not have been torqued properly during vehicle assembly. Should they loosen, a knocking sound may be heard while the vehicle is in motion. In the worst case, the driveshaft screws could loosen to the point where the driveshaft detaches from the gearbox. If the vehicle is moving when this happens, the detached driveshaft could cause damage to the gearbox housing. A damaged gearbox housing could leak gearbox oil onto the street and create a risk of vehicle crash for both the driver and other motorists. This could result in property damage, personal injury or death.

    Corrective action. Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the driveshaft screws.

    Corrective action. Dealers will replace the brake lamp switch with a newly revised version. This action includes vehicles previously affected by Transport Canada recall 03-184 and 04-075. This will cause warning lights for ABS, brake and the ESC systems to illuminate. If this happens, the brake system related vehicle stabilizing functions (ABS/ESC) may not be available, increasing the risk of a loss of vehicle control and could lead to a crash causing injury and/or property damage.

    Corrective action. Dealers will update the ABS control module with improved diagnostic capability to detect insufficient PCU ground connection. ABS modules with insufficient ground connections will be replaced.

    Issue. On certain vehicles, the steering wheel clock spring could become contaminated with long hair or long fibers which may cause a displacement of the internal guide loops. When the guide loops are dragged out of position, they may apply tension to the internal flat cable and cause it to tear. Should the cable tear, the electrical connection to the driver's front airbag may be lost, causing the airbag monitoring indicator light to illuminate. Failure of the driver's airbag to deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of personal injury to the seat occupant.

    Corrective action. Dealers will install a cover of a different design to help prevent clock spring contamination caused by hair or other fibers. In instances where the vehicle has an airbag light on (and diagnosis confirms the steering wheel clock spring requires replacement), dealers will install a new steering wheel clock spring.

    Issue. On certain Audi A3, TT, TT Roadster, and Volkswagen EOS, Golf wagon, GTI, Jetta and Jetta wagon equipped with a Direct-Shift Gearbox (DSG), the wiring harness of a temperature sensor in the DSG may have connector wires that were insufficiently crimped during assembly. As such, the temperature sensor could falsely detect a high gearbox oil temperature, causing the transmission to abruptly shift to the Neutral position. A loss of propulsion, in conjunction with traffic and road conditions, and the driver's reactions, could increase the risk of a crash causing personal injury or death.

    Corrective action. Dealers will reprogram the transmission control module with updated software..

    Issue. On certain vehicles, driveshaft cover plate screws may not have been torqued properly during vehicle assembly. Should they loosen, a knocking sound may be heard while the vehicle is in motion. In the worst case, the driveshaft screws could loosen to the point where the driveshaft detaches from the gearbox. If the vehicle is moving when this happens, the detached driveshaft could cause damage to the gearbox housing. A damaged gearbox housing could leak gearbox oil onto the street and create a risk of vehicle crash for both the driver and other motorists. This could result in property damage, personal injury or death.

    Corrective action. Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the driveshaft screws.

    Issue. Certain vehicles equipped with the comfort seats option may have a seat heater element that can malfunction when the ignition switch is in the "ON" position and the seat heater switch is also "ON". If this happened, the seated occupant may experience excessive heat in this location. The heating mat could damage, or melt a small hole in the seat. If this were to occur, an electrical/melting smell or small amount of smoke would be noticeable. In some cases, the small hole in the seat could damage the seated occupant's clothing. In rare instances, this could lead to a minor or superficial skin injury.

    Corrective action. Dealers will modify the driver's seat heater by installing an electrical repair kit and will install a new passenger side seat heater switch.

On certain vehicles, the hazard switch and flasher system function may degrade over time because of distortion and material transfer of the contacts of certain hazard switch relays which occurs due to substantially increased electrical current load from higher-wattage turn signal bulbs. The subject vehicles utilize a 27-watt turn signal bulb, instead of the 21-watt bulb used in other VW vehicles, which results in substantially higher current draw through the hazard switch relay. This may result in intermittent or inoperative turn signal and hazard flasher function.

    Corrective action. Dealers will replace the hazard switch relay.

    Issue. On certain vehicle equipped with TDI-PD (Pumpe-Düse) engines, the high-pressure diesel pumps were produced with improper fasteners. In rare cases, one of these improper fasteners may yield due to repeated cyclic loading and allow diesel fuel to escape from the high-pressure pump. Diesel fuel in the presence of an ignition source may lead to a fire. Additionally, due to the quantity of fuel that may be released, there is a crash risk posed to vehicles traveling behind the subject vehicle.

    Corrective action. Dealers will install a replacement diesel pump kit.

  • The City Jetta (2007 to 2008) and Jetta City (2009 to 2010) were Canada-only names for a lower-priced version of the fourth-generation car, sold alongside the newer fifth generation.[2]
  • The fifth-generation wagon was called the Jetta Wagon in Canada for 2009 only and the Golf Wagon from 2010, which matters when looking up parts or recalls.[3][22]
  • About 105,000 Canadian Volkswagen and Audi 2.0 L TDI vehicles, including the 2009 to 2015 Jetta TDI, were covered by a nationwide settlement worth up to CAD $2.1 billion that was approved by courts in Ontario and Quebec.[21][22]
  • Factory engine block heaters were fitted to Canadian Jettas: Transport Canada recalls cover the heater itself on some 2013 to 2015 cars and an English-only warning label on the heater cable of 2016 to 2019 cars.[25][27]
  • Sixth-generation Canadian Jettas could still be ordered with leather seats, while the North American lineup otherwise switched to leatherette.[4]
  • The Jetta sold in Canada is front-wheel drive only, and since the Golf hatchback was dropped after 2021 it has been the only Volkswagen economy car sold here.[5][18]
