Toyota Tacoma

In Canada: generations, trims, common issues, recalls and fuel costs

This guide covers the Toyota Tacoma across 4 generations from model year 1995. Transport Canada lists 35 recalls for it since the 2000 model year, the latest issued in August 2026 (list read ). Frame programs in Canada are time-limited and administered like warranty extensions; a used Tacoma’s frame should be inspected before purchase regardless of program history.

Overview

The Tacoma is Toyota’s mid-size pickup, sold in Canada since 1995 as the successor to the compact Toyota Truck. It appeals to buyers who want a truck for camping, hunting, towing a small trailer or daily driving without the bulk of a full-size pickup. In Canada it has been sold mostly as a four-wheel-drive truck, and the current model comes only with 4x4. The number-one thing to check on an older Tacoma is the frame: Toyota ran frame-corrosion programs covering 1995–2000 and 2005–2017 trucks in Canada, with frame replacement where rust had perforated, and those programs have time limits. Road salt makes this a real concern in Calgary.

Generations

Newest first. Years are model years; “on” means the generation is still in production.

  1. Fourth generation

    2024 on

Moved to the TNGA-F platform shared with the Tundra, with a 2.4 L turbo four-cylinder or the i-FORCE MAX hybrid, and coil-sprung rear axles on Double Cabs.[1][9]

  2. Third generation

    2016–2023

Similar in size but with a 3.5 L V6 and more high-strength steel in the frame; refreshed for 2020. Built in San Antonio and Baja California. The 2020 Canadian line-up was V6 and part-time 4WD only.[1][7]

  3. Second generation

    2005–2015

Larger truck with a 2.7 L four-cylinder or 4.0 L V6 and an open C-section frame. Built in Tijuana, Mexico, and Fremont, California, with U.S. production moving to San Antonio, Texas in 2010. Stability control became standard for 2009.[1]

  4. First generation

    1995–2004

Replaced the Toyota Truck with a more car-like ride; Canadian trucks used a 2.4 L or 2.7 L four-cylinder or a 3.4 L V6, and a four-door Double Cab arrived for 2001. Its fully boxed frame had inadequate rust protection, and many of these frames rusted badly.[1][3]

Common issues

Problems a source documents for this model, tagged by what kind of source it is. What each tag means:

Recall
A safety recall. Transport Canada’s list further down has the recall itself, and a dealer can tell you from your VIN whether it applies to your vehicle.
Documented
Documented by the sources cited, such as a manufacturer program, a court-approved settlement or a reputable publication.
  • Frame corrosion, first generation

    Documented Model years 1995–2004

Poor rust protection inside the boxed frame let it corrode through. Toyota extended corrosion coverage and repaired, replaced or bought back affected frames; the 15-year windows for these trucks have now closed.[1][2]

  • Frame corrosion programs, 2005–2017

    Documented Model years 2005–2017

Toyota Canada’s later frame programs covered 2005–2010 trucks for 12 or 15 years and 2011–2017 trucks for 12 years, with frame replacement if the rail was perforated; the latest program required a dealer inspection and anti-corrosion treatment before December 16, 2021.[1][2]

  • Spare tire can drop from a rusted carrier

    Recall Model years 2001–2004

Corrosion of the spare-tire carrier lift plate under the bed can let the spare fall onto the road.[1][11]

  • Front lower ball joint wear

    Recall Model years 2001–2004

A manufacturing issue could wear the front lower ball joints early, adding steering effort and noise and, in extreme cases, letting the joint separate. Dealers inspect and replace as needed.[10]

  • Rear leaf springs can break from corrosion

    Recall Model years 2005–2011

Rear leaf springs could fracture from stress and corrosion, and a broken leaf could puncture the fuel tank. Dealers replace the spring assemblies with improved ones.[12]

  • Rear differential seal leak

    Recall Model years 2016–2017

The seal between the rear differential and axle housing could leak oil, risking noise, lost drive or rear-axle lockup. Dealers inspect, re-torque or replace the gasket.[13]

  • Low-pressure fuel pump failure

    Recall Model years 2017–2020

The in-tank fuel pump can fail, causing rough running, a no-start or a stall. The recall replaces the pump.[14]

  • Rear brake hoses can be damaged

    Recall Model years 2024–2025

On certain 4WD trucks with 16-inch brakes and 17- or 18-inch wheels, the rear brake hoses can be damaged and leak fluid. Dealers replace the hoses.[15]

Fuel economy and cost

Natural Resources Canada’s combined ratings (55% city, 45% highway driving) for the newest model years it has rated. NRCan rates every drivetrain, transmission and package separately, so each row gives the range across them. The yearly cost assumes 20,000 km a year, the distance NRCan’s own fuel consumption search tool assumes, at Statistics Canada’s average self-serve price in Calgary for August 2026: regular 162.3¢/L, premium 188.4¢/L, diesel 210.6¢/L. Each rating is costed at the fuel NRCan rated it on. How far and how you drive will move it.

Canada notes

  • Frame programs in Canada are time-limited and administered like warranty extensions; a used Tacoma’s frame should be inspected before purchase regardless of program history.[2]
  • Canadian Tacomas lean heavily to 4x4: the 2020 line-up came only with part-time 4WD and a two-speed transfer case, and every 2026 grade is four-wheel drive, with full-time 4WD on the hybrid Limited.[7][9]
  • The Tacoma is not built in Canada; trucks come from the U.S. and Mexico.[1]
  • Block heaters: certain Toyota dealer block heater kits fitted to 2005–2019 Tacomas were recalled because the cable could overheat while plugged in.[16]
