In Canada: generations, trims, common issues, recalls and fuel costs

This guide covers the Toyota Corolla from model year 1998: 5 generations, 11 trims, 7 engines and 8 documented common issues, each with its sources. Transport Canada lists 37 recalls for it since the 2000 model year, the latest issued in May 2025 (list read ). NRCan rates the 2026 Corolla at 4.7–6.8 L/100 km combined.

Overview

The Corolla has been sold in Canada since 1967 and is the default choice for buyers who want a simple, economical compact that holds its value. For three decades many of the Corollas on Canadian roads were built at Toyota’s plant in Cambridge, Ontario, which assembled the car from 1988 until 2019. It suits students, commuters and anyone after low running costs; the current car offers a 2.0 L gas engine or a hybrid, and since 2023 the hybrid can be ordered with all-wheel drive, a rarity among compact cars. Calgary owners of older cars should check for airbag inflator recall work (2003–2008) and the 2009–2010 cold-weather brake vacuum recall, which Toyota traced to condensation freezing in extreme cold. This page covers the sedan; the Corolla Hatchback and Matrix are related models.

Common issues

Problems a source documents for this model, tagged by what kind of source it is. What each tag means:

Recall
A safety recall. Transport Canada’s list further down has the recall itself, and a dealer can tell you from your VIN whether it applies to your vehicle.
Service bulletin
A manufacturer’s technical service bulletin: its instructions to dealers for diagnosing and repairing the problem. A bulletin is not a recall.
  • Passenger airbag inflator recall

    Recall Model years 2003–2008

The front passenger airbag inflator can build too much pressure and rupture in a crash. A series of recalls, consolidated by Transport Canada in 2016, replaces the inflator; check a used car’s recall history.[19]

  • Engine control module can crack and stall the engine

    Recall Model years 2005–2008

On 1ZZ-FE cars, cracked solder joints on the engine computer can light the check-engine lamp, cause harsh shifting or a no-start, and occasionally stall the engine while driving. Dealers inspect and replace the ECM.[20]

  • Brake vacuum port can freeze in extreme cold

    Recall Model years 2009–2010

In very low temperatures, crankcase condensation could freeze and block the intake port that feeds the brake booster, making the pedal hard and lengthening stops. Dealers fit a redesigned intake connector that moves the port.[21]

  • Sticking accelerator pedal

    Recall Model years 2009–2010

Part of Toyota’s 2010 pedal recall: the pedal could become slow to return or stick partly depressed. Dealers install a steel reinforcement bar in the pedal assembly.[22]

  • Oil consumption on 2.4 L XRS models

    Service bulletin Model years 2009–2011

The 2.4 L 2AZ-FE used in the XRS is documented to burn oil. Toyota’s U.S. warranty enhancement program ZE7 included certain 2009–2011 Corollas; the 1.8 L engines are not part of it.[8][17]

  • Airbag control module may not fire in a crash

    Recall Model years 2011–2019

Circuits in the airbag control module could be damaged in a crash, leaving the airbags and pretensioners unable to deploy. Dealers install an electrical noise filter to protect the module.[23]

  • Low-pressure fuel pump failure

    Recall Model years 2018–2020

The fuel pump in the tank can fail, causing rough running, a no-start or loss of power while driving. The recall replaces the pump.[24]

  • Coolant leak from the flow shut-off valve

    Service bulletin Model years 2020–2021

A small coolant leak from a valve can bring up “Engine Maintenance Required” or weak air conditioning. Toyota’s U.S. customer support program 24TE04 covers certain 2020–2021 Corollas; ask a Canadian dealer whether a VIN is included.[18]

Canada notes

  • Built in Canada from 1988 to 2019 at TMMC in Cambridge, Ontario, which also supplied the U.S. and Mexico; Toyota Canada sold a 20th Anniversary Edition for 2008 to mark two decades of Canadian production.[3][4][7]
  • Canada kept grades the U.S. did not: the XRS stayed on sale here after 2010, the 2015 special edition was called the 50th Anniversary Limited Edition, and the 2020–2022 base L could be ordered with a manual.[4][5][6][14]
  • Winter: since 2023 the Corolla Hybrid is offered with electric all-wheel drive, standard on the SE and XSE hybrids, and Toyota recalled 2009–2010 cars whose brake vacuum port could freeze in extreme cold.[15][16][21]
  • Block heaters: certain Toyota dealer block heater kits fitted to Corollas from 1998 to 2021 were recalled because the cable could overheat while plugged in.[25]
