Toyota Camry
In Canada: generations, trims, common issues, recalls and fuel costs
This guide covers the Toyota Camry from model year 1997: 6 generations, 6 trims, 9 engines and 9 documented common issues, each with its sources. Transport Canada lists 38 recalls for it since the 2000 model year, the latest issued in August 2026 (list read ). NRCan rates the 2026 Camry at 5.0–5.5 L/100 km combined.
Overview
The Camry is Toyota’s mid-size sedan, sold in Canada since the 1980s. Buyers tend to be commuters, families and fleet operators who value a roomy, comfortable, predictable car that is cheap to keep running. Canadian Camrys have mostly come from Toyota’s Kentucky plant. Recent history matters for winter driving: all-wheel drive returned to the gas Camry for 2020, and since 2025 every Camry is a hybrid, with electric all-wheel drive available on most Canadian grades. Owners of 2007–2009 four-cylinder cars should know about Toyota’s oil-consumption program, and 2018–2021 cars about the fuel pump recall and a coolant valve program.

Common issues
Problems a source documents for this model, tagged by what kind of source it is. What each tag means:
- Recall
- A safety recall. Transport Canada’s list further down has the recall itself, and a dealer can tell you from your VIN whether it applies to your vehicle.
- Service bulletin
- A manufacturer’s technical service bulletin: its instructions to dealers for diagnosing and repairing the problem. A bulletin is not a recall.
- Owner complaint pattern
- Owners have reported it in complaints. A pattern in reports is not a recall, and not a finding that every vehicle has the problem.
- Documented
- Documented by the sources cited, such as a manufacturer program, a court-approved settlement or a reputable publication.
-
Oil gel (engine sludge)
Some engines of this era can build up oil gel, showing as blue exhaust smoke, a check-engine light or high oil use. A U.S. customer support program and class-action settlement covered 1997–2001 four-cylinder and 1997–2002 V6 Camrys; it has long expired, and regular oil changes are the main defence.[10][11]
-
V6 crankshaft pulley can fail
On V6 cars the crankshaft pulley’s outer ring can slip, causing noise and a charging warning, and the power steering belt can come off. Dealers inspect and replace the pulley.[23]
-
Accelerator pedal and floor mat recalls
Part of Toyota’s 2009–2010 recalls: an unsecured or wrong floor mat could trap the pedal, and some pedals could stick or return slowly. Dealers reshaped the pedal, added a brake override on some cars and fitted a reinforcement bar.[24][25]
-
Oil consumption, 2.4 L four-cylinder
The 2AZ-FE is documented to burn oil because of its piston ring design. Toyota’s U.S. program ZE7 covered certain 2007–2009 Camrys and 2007–2011 Camry Hybrids after a dealer oil-consumption test.[9][19]
-
Sticky or cracked dashboard
Owners have reported dashboards turning soft, sticky or shiny. Toyota’s U.S. warranty enhancement program ZE6 replaced affected dashboards on certain 2007–2011 Camrys; that coverage has since ended.[20][22]
-
Driver power window master switch can overheat
Uneven grease in the driver’s master switch could let it stick, short and overheat. Dealers apply a heat-inhibiting grease or replace the switch’s circuit board.[26]
-
Low-pressure fuel pump failure
The in-tank fuel pump can fail, leading to rough running, a no-start or loss of power while driving. The recall replaces the pump.[27]
-
Brake vacuum pump failure
On certain 2018 Camrys the brake vacuum pump could fail, raising pedal effort and stopping distance. Dealers inspect and repair or replace the pump.[28]
-
Coolant leak from the flow shut-off valve
A small coolant leak from a valve can bring up an “Engine Maintenance Required” message or weak air conditioning. Toyota’s U.S. customer support program 24TE04 covers certain 2018–2021 Camrys; ask a Canadian dealer whether a VIN is included.[21]

Fuel economy and cost
Natural Resources Canada’s combined ratings (55% city, 45% highway driving) for the newest model years it has rated. NRCan rates every drivetrain, transmission and package separately, so each row gives the range across them. The yearly cost assumes 20,000 km a year, the distance NRCan’s own fuel consumption search tool assumes, at Statistics Canada’s average self-serve price in Calgary for August 2026: regular 162.3¢/L, premium 188.4¢/L, diesel 210.6¢/L. Each rating is costed at the fuel NRCan rated it on. How far and how you drive will move it.

Canada notes
- The Camry sedan has not been built in Canada; Canadian cars come from Kentucky or Japan, and the current generation is sourced from the U.S. The related Camry Solara coupe was built at TMMC in Cambridge from 1998 to 2003.[3][4][7][8]
- Canadian grades differ from U.S. ones: from 2025 Canada has no LE, the base SE is a de-contented grade, and AWD is optional only on the SE Upgrade and standard on the XSE and XLE.[7][18]
- Winter: the 2020–2024 gas Camry offered AWD that runs mostly in front-drive and sends up to half the torque rearward when needed; the 2025+ hybrid AWD uses a rear electric motor instead.[17][18]
- Block heaters: certain Toyota dealer block heater kits fitted to 2002–2018 Camrys were recalled because the cable could overheat while plugged in.[29]
