This guide covers the Tesla Model Y across 2 generations from model year 2020. Transport Canada lists 22 recalls for it since the 2020 model year, the latest issued in August 2026 (list read ). The Model Y warms its cabin with a heat pump instead of a resistance heater; it was the first Tesla built that way.
Overview
The Model Y is Tesla’s battery-electric crossover, a larger sibling of the Model 3 sedan that shares most of its parts, and in 2023 it was the world’s best-selling vehicle. Canadian deliveries began in 2020. It suits commuters and families who can charge at home and want an SUV with all-wheel drive and fast charging. For Alberta, two things matter most: winter range and service. Every Model Y has a heat pump, which uses far less energy than resistance heating, but range still drops in deep cold. It has also had a run of recalls for front suspension fasteners and knuckles, many owner reports of "phantom braking" on 2021–2022 cars, and a US probe into doors that would not open when the 12-volt battery ran low.

Original Model Y
2020–2025
Production began at Fremont, California in January 2020, later joined by Shanghai, Texas and Berlin; it was Tesla’s first car with a heat pump and large single-piece castings. From April 2023 Tesla supplied Canada with Shanghai-built cars, which Natural Resources Canada lists as "Import" variants.[1][2]

"Phantom braking" with cruise control or Autopilot
Owners reported sudden, unneeded braking at highway speed while using adaptive cruise control or Autopilot; NHTSA opened an investigation in 2022 after hundreds of complaints and closed it in 2026, judging the safety risk low.[4][5][19][20]

Front suspension fasteners and knuckles
Several recalls cover front suspension bolts that may not have been tightened (upper control arm and lateral links) and suspension knuckles that may not have been heat-treated, any of which can cause a sudden alignment change. Tesla Service inspects and tightens or replaces the parts.[7][8][9][10][11][12]

Loss of power steering assist
Software could overstress the electric power steering circuit board, so assist can be lost when the car stops and then accelerates again, with a warning on screen. Tesla fixed it with a software update.[13][14]

Hood latch not warning when open
The hood latch may fail to detect that the hood (front trunk lid) is unlatched, so no warning appears and it could open while driving. The fix was an over-the-air software update.[15][16]

Doors that will not open with a low 12-volt battery
In 2025 NHTSA opened a probe into about 174,000 2021 Model Ys after reports that the electronic exterior door handles stopped working when the 12-volt battery voltage dropped, sometimes with no warning; some parents broke a window to reach a child. Know where the manual releases are and replace a weak 12-volt battery promptly.[1][6]

Issue. On a small number of vehicles, a problem with the reverse lamp wiring could cause them not to work. Note: This problem would cause a warning message to display in the instrument cluster.

Corrective action. Tesla has released an over-the-air software update to fix this problem. Tesla will notify owners by email. Tesla will also identify vehicles in which the computer circuit board experienced a short circuit, or damage that could lead to a short circuit, prior to the release of software versions 2024.44.25.3, 2024.45.25.6 or a later release. If your vehicle is identified, you will be advised to contact Tesla Service to replace the car computer.

Issue. A previous over-the-air (OTA) software update could cause the vehicle not to display the correct visual warning indicators when there are problems with the brake system or when the parking brake is applied. As a result, the BRAKE, PARK, and antilock brake system (ABS) visual indicators would display as text instead of symbols.
Safety risk. While there is a low risk to safety, Canadian regulations require visual warnings to use common symbols, instead of words, to avoid driver confusion.

Issue. On vehicles equipped with the Autosteer advanced driver-assistance feature, when using the feature, the vehicle may not provide strong enough warnings or monitor the driver closely enough to prevent misuse of the feature.
Safety risk. A driver that doesn't pay close attention while using the Autosteer feature or who doesn't react quickly when Autosteer is canceled could have an increased risk of a crash.

Issue. On certain vehicles, the bolts that attach the brake calipers to the wheel knuckles may not be properly tightened. As a result, the bolts could loosen over time and the caliper could contact the wheel rim. If this happens, damage to the wheel rim could cause a sudden loss of tire pressure.
Safety risk. A sudden loss of tire pressure could cause a loss of control and increase the risk of a crash.
Corrective action. Tesla will notify owners and arrange for an inspection of the brake caliper bolts. They will be tightened, if necessary. If damage from a loose or missing bolt is found during the inspection, Tesla Service will arrange for a tow to the nearest service center for repair.

Issue, risk and remedy
Issue. On certain vehicles, when switching the distance display setting from kilometers to miles, the speedometer displays the vehicle speed in miles per hour (mph) only. Canadian regulations require that speed be displayed in either kilometers per hour (km/h) or in both km/h and mph.
Safety risk. This small error does not affect vehicle safety.
Corrective action. This is not a recall. Tesla has made changes to ensure that all new vehicle speedometers display mph and km/h when the display distance is set to miles. In addition, this change was sent to all vehicles in firmware update 2020.36.11.

Issue, risk and remedy
Issue. Certain vehicles do not have the correct warning indicator to show when the passenger airbag is turned off. Recent changes to Canadian regulations require all companies to use a symbol to show when the passenger airbag is turned off instead of text. This change can help to avoid confusion.
Safety risk. This small error does not affect the function of the airbag system or the accuracy of the information displayed to the occupant.
Corrective action. This is not a recall. Tesla has made changes to ensure that all new vehicles display the correct symbol when the passenger airbag is turned off. In addition, this change was sent to all vehicles in firmware update 2020.36.

Energy use and range
Natural Resources Canada’s combined ratings (55% city, 45% highway driving) for the newest model years it has rated. NRCan rates every drivetrain and package separately, so each row gives the range across them.
Battery-electric ratings: energy use in kilowatt-hours per 100 km and range on a full charge. No electricity cost is estimated: what a year of charging costs depends on your electricity rate and where you charge.

Canada notes
- The Model Y warms its cabin with a heat pump instead of a resistance heater; it was the first Tesla built that way. That matters in an Alberta winter: below about −7 °C, an EV relying on resistance heating can give up 40% or more of its range, and a heat pump can deliver the same warmth with considerably less electricity.[1]
- Natural Resources Canada publishes official energy use and range for each Canadian Model Y variant, from about 15.4 kWh/100 km for the 2026 rear-wheel-drive models to about 20 kWh/100 km for some Performance versions.[2][3]
