This guide covers the Mazda Mazda3 across 4 generations from model year 2004. Transport Canada lists 26 recalls for it since the 2004 model year, the latest issued in May 2025 (list read ). Canadian naming differs from the U.S.: trims are GX, GS, GT and GT Turbo, and the hatchback is sold as the Mazda3 Sport.
Overview
The Mazda3 replaced the Protegé for the 2004 model year and quickly became one of Canada’s most popular cars; in 2006 it was the country’s second best-selling car. It is sold as a sedan and as a hatchback that Mazda Canada calls the Mazda3 Sport. Buyers tend to be people who want a compact that is enjoyable to drive and nicely finished, whether as a first car or a commuter. Since 2019 all-wheel drive has been available, and a 250 hp turbo arrived for 2021. Calgary owners of older cars should check the recalls for corroded liftgate struts (2010–2013) and seized parking-brake actuators (2014–2017), both of which road salt makes worse.

Steering wheel emblem can shatter in a crash
The plastic logo on the driver airbag cover can turn brittle with age and break apart when the airbag deploys. Dealers replace the airbag cover.[7]

Power steering pump damage from rust particles
Rust formed inside the electro-hydraulic power steering pressure pipe during manufacture could reach the pump and damage it, making the system drop into fail-safe with no assist.[8]

Corroded hatchback liftgate stays
Weak anti-corrosion treatment on the outer tube of the rear lift stays can let them rust and break. Dealers replace both stays.[9]

Driver seat height mechanism can break
Weak push nuts or lifter links can let the driver’s seat drop or tilt suddenly. Dealers reinforce or replace the lifter links.[10]

Parking brake actuator seizes from corrosion
On cars with a hand-operated parking brake, the rear caliper boot can let the actuator shaft corrode and stick, reducing holding force or making the brake drag. Dealers repair or replace the rear calipers.[11]

Wipers can stop working
An electrical fault can stop the windshield wipers. Dealers replace the front body control module.[12]

Engine software could damage the valvetrain
A control-software error could keep the valve clearance adjuster from working, leading to misfires, power loss or a stall. Dealers update the software.[13]

Automatic emergency braking can trigger falsely
Smart Brake Support may detect an obstacle that is not there and brake hard. Dealers update the software and, on early cars, reprogram or replace the instrument cluster.[14]

Issue, risk and remedy
Issue. On certain vehicles, if the ignition switch is left in the "ON" position for too long, it could drain the battery. As a result, when the battery is recharged, and the vehicle is restarted, the airbag warning light will turn on and the airbags won't work in a crash.
Safety risk. Airbags that don't work properly could increase the risk of injury in a crash.
Corrective action. Mazda will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to inspect and, as necessary, update the vehicle software or replace the airbag sensor unit.

Issue, risk and remedy
Issue. On certain vehicles, a software problem could cause the rearview camera image to flicker or not to appear on the display. Canadian regulations require the rearview image to display when the transmission is shifted into reverse gear. Note: This recall only affects vehicles equipped with a dynamic guideline rearview monitor and/or the 360-degree monitor.
Safety risk. A rearview camera image that does not display could reduce a driver's ability to see behind the vehicle while backing up. This could increase the risk of a crash.
Corrective action. Mazda will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to update the view monitor control module software.

Issue, risk and remedy
Issue. On certain vehicles, the front brake caliper mounting bolts may not be properly tightened. This could cause the bolts to loosen, which may result in reduced brake effectiveness. If the bolts fall out, the caliper could also come in contact with the wheel rim and cause a loss of vehicle control.
Safety risk. Reduced brake effectiveness could cause an increase in stopping distance and create the risk of a crash. A loss of vehicle control could increase the risk of a crash.
Corrective action. Mazda will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to check the tightening torque of the front brake caliper mounting bolts. If a bolt is missing, the caliper and remaining bolt will be replaced.

Issue, risk and remedy
Issue. On certain cars, the automatic emergency braking system (called Smart Brake Support or SBS) may falsely detect an obstacle in front of the car while driving. As a result, the brakes may apply automatically when there is no risk of a crash.
Safety risk. If the SBS system activates the brakes unexpectedly when there is no risk of a crash, there could be an increased risk of a rear-end crash.
Corrective action. Mazda will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your car to a dealer to update the SBS control software. On certain cars with earlier build dates, the instrument cluster will also be reprogrammed or replaced. Mazda will provide these owners with an updated owner's manual that provides revised information about how to temporarily deactivate the SBS system.

Issue, risk and remedy
Issue. On certain cars, the interior rearview mirror glass was not properly attached and could fall off.
Safety risk. If interior rearview mirror glass suddenly falls off, the driver’s rear visibility will be decreased. This could increase the risk of a crash.
Corrective action. Mazda will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their car to a dealer to replace the interior rearview mirror.

Issue, risk and remedy
Issue. The material on the driver and front passenger seatbacks may not be installed correctly. This could cause it to in interfere with the release button for the head restraint. As a result, the button could be stuck in the ‘release’ position and allow the head restraint to move up and down freely. In a crash, this could allow the head restraint to detach.
Safety risk. A head restraint that does not remain in place in a crash could create a risk of injury.
Corrective action. Mazda will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their vehicle to a dealership to install a plastic spacer at the bottom of the head restraint lock release button.

Issue, risk and remedy
Issue. On certain vehicles, a software error in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) could cause the valve clearance adjuster not to work properly. This could result in internal engine damage. If this happens, the engine may misfire and lose power. In the worst case, the engine may stall while driving without the ability to restart it. The malfunction indicator light (MIL) may also turn on in the instrument cluster.
Safety risk. A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash.
Corrective action. Mazda will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their vehicle to a dealer to update the PCM software.

Issue, risk and remedy
Issue. On certain cars, the wheel lug nuts may not be properly tightened due to a manufacturing issue. This could cause the nuts to loosen or fall off, and could result in a wheel separating from the car.
Safety risk. A wheel separation could increase the risk of a crash. A wheel that separates could also hit another person or vehicle.
Corrective action. The company will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their car to a dealer to re-tighten the front and rear wheel nuts to the proper specification.

Issue, risk and remedy
Issue. On certain cars, the passenger airbag status and seat belt status indicator lights may not work properly. These lights are designed to indicate when the passenger airbag is turned off and when a passenger is not buckled. Instead, this problem could cause the passenger airbag status indicator light to incorrectly turn off when the passenger airbag is deactivated. It could also cause the passenger seat belt status indicator to incorrectly turn off when the seat belt is not buckled. Additionally, the rear seat belt status indicators may turn off regardless of seat belt use. Note: This problem has no effect on the operation of the airbag system.
Safety risk. Seat belt and airbag indicator lights that do not work properly could cause confusion. They could also cause a driver to be unaware that the rear seat occupants are not buckled. This could increase the risk of injury in a crash.
Corrective action. The company will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their car to a dealer to replace the seat belt indicator assembly.

Issue. On certain vehicles, a problem with the rearview camera connector could cause distortion or flickering of the rearview camera image. Note: This recall only affects hatchback (5-door) models.
Safety risk. A rearview camera image that doesn't display correctly could reduce a driver's ability to see behind the vehicle while backing up. This could increase the risk of a crash.

Issue, risk and remedy
Issue. On certain vehicles equipped with hand-operated parking brakes, the rear brake caliper protective boot on the parking brake system may not perform as intended, causing the parking brake actuator shaft to corrode. Over time, the actuator shaft may become stuck in the brake caliper body which could lead to decreased parking brake holding force or cause the parking brake to drag while driving. Decreased parking brake holding force could cause the vehicle to roll away if parked on a slope which would increase the risk of injury and/or damage to property.
Corrective action. Dealers will inspect and repair or replace the rear caliper assemblies as necessary.

Issue. Certain vehicles may have been manufactured with defective fuel tank shut-off-valves. Under certain conditions, this could cause fuel to flow through the shut-off-valve into the charcoal canister and leak from the external vent. Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire causing injury and/or property damage.

Issue. On certain vehicles equipped with the regenerative braking system, a fault could cause the charging system to malfunction, which would display the charging system malfunction warning light and error message. Continued vehicle operation in this state could result in an engine stall and a loss of motive power. This could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.

Issue, risk and remedy
Issue. On certain vehicles, the push nuts and/or the lifter link which adjusts the height of the driver seat could be of insufficient strength and could become broken or detach from the seat frame. If this occurs, the seat height and inclination position would change rapidly, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.
Corrective action. Dealers will inspect the condition of the driver's seat lifter link. If no cracks are detected, a reinforcement bracket will be added to the lifter links, and the number of push nuts will be increased to two per seat lifter link. If any cracks are detected, dealers will replace the entire seat adjuster unit with a modified part.

Issue. On certain vehicles, the anti-corrosion treatment of the outer tube of the rear lift gate stay may be insufficient. Over time, the outer tube of the rear lift gate stay may corrode and break off, which could increase the risk of injury.

Issue, risk and remedy
Issue. On certain vehicles, a part of the headlight housing where the Daytime Running Light (DRL) bulb is attached may be damage by heat from the bulb when the vehicle is left idling for an extended period or while driving in slow-moving traffic. In the worst case, the housing may be deformed, resulting in bulb becoming detached and loss of DRL functionality. A loss of DRL illumination could render the vehicle less visible to other motorists and to pedestrians during daylight hours, possibly resulting in a crash causing personal injury or death.
Corrective action. Dealers will affect repairs.

Issue, risk and remedy
Issue. On certain vehicles, clearance between the engine harness and the housing of the starter motor may be insufficient. As a result, the covering of the harness may be damaged through vibration during operation, possibly causing a short-circuit between certain harness wires and the starter housing. A short circuit can result in engine control malfunction and/or poor shift quality. In the worst case, the main fuse may blow out causing the engine to stall and inability of restart. Engine stalling would result in lost propulsion which, in conjunction with traffic and road conditions, and the driver's reactions, could increase the risk of a crash.
Corrective action. Dealers will inspect the engine harness and, if necessary, install a protector clip.

Issue. On certain vehicles, the plastic logo on the steering wheel airbag cover could become brittle over time. If this happens, the logo could shatter and could become a projectile when the airbag inflates in a crash.
Safety risk. Loose parts that are projected toward the occupants when an airbag inflates could increase the risk of an injury.

Issue, risk and remedy
Issue. On certain vehicles, the ground terminal of the windshield wiper motor may have been inadvertently bent during vehicle assembly. Over time, the electrical resistance of the motor circuit may increase, causing the wiper motor to become inoperative. Loss of windshield wiping capability, should it occur during a rainy/snowy day, may compromise the driver's ability to see the road and its users, which could result in a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury.
Corrective action. Dealers will install an additional ground harness to the wiper motor.

Issue, risk and remedy
Issue. On certain vehicles with Electro-Hydraulic Power Assist Steering (EHPAS), rust had formed inside the high-pressure pipe on the power steering system during manufacturing due to improper processing. Rust particles may detach from the pipe walls and enter the motorized power steering pump, causing damage to the pump bearings. As a result, gear lubrication may be reduced, leading to an increased load on the motor. Should this happen, there is the potential for the power steering system to enter the fail safe mode in order to prevent overheating, resulting in the power steering warning lamp to light and the motorized pump to stop which could lead to a loss of power assist and the required steering effort will increase.
Corrective action. Dealers will flush the power steering system and repair as necessary.

Issue. On certain vehicles, due to a crack in the solder connection attaching the acceleration sensor in the airbag control unit, the airbag may not deploy when the vehicle is involved in a frontal crash.

Issue, risk and remedy
Issue. On certain vehicles, a crack in the housing of the airbag crash zone sensor may allow water to enter the sensor and cause a short circuit. This will illuminate the airbag warning light. Until the problem is remedied, the airbag will not deploy as required in a frontal crash, increasing the risk of injury to the seat occupant.
Corrective action. Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace with a modified sensor.

Natural Resources Canada’s combined ratings (55% city, 45% highway driving) for the newest model years it has rated. NRCan rates every drivetrain, transmission and package separately, so each row gives the range across them. The yearly cost assumes 20,000 km a year, the distance NRCan’s own fuel consumption search tool assumes, at Statistics Canada’s average self-serve price in Calgary for August 2026: regular 162.3¢/L, premium 188.4¢/L, diesel 210.6¢/L. Canada notes
- Canadian naming differs from the U.S.: trims are GX, GS, GT and GT Turbo, and the hatchback is sold as the Mazda3 Sport.[1][6]
- Canada kept a 2.0 L Skyactiv engine in the fourth-generation line-up that the U.S. did not get, until the 2.5 L became standard for 2024.[1][4]
- Winter: i-Activ AWD has been available since 2019; for 2026 it comes with the GS Luxury Package, the GT and the GT Turbo. Several recalls on older cars (lift stays, parking brake actuators) involve corrosion.[3][6][9][11]
- Only one car outsold the Mazda3 in Canada in 2006.[1]
