Overview
The Wrangler traces its lineage through the CJ to the wartime Jeep: a body-on-frame SUV with solid axles, part-time four-wheel drive, removable doors and a fold-down windshield. Built since 1986, it gained a four-door Unlimited in 2007 that became the version most buyers choose, and it has a record of strong resale value in Canada. Every Wrangler since 2000 has been built in Toledo, Ohio. Lighter and more comfortable on the road, with an 8-speed automatic, a 2.0 L turbo option, the 4xe plug-in hybrid from 2021 and the V8 Rubicon 392. The 2024 refresh brought a 12-inch touchscreen and the Rubicon X. Built in Toledo.[4]

2007–2018
Wider, with stability control, power windows and the first four-door Wrangler, the Unlimited. The 3.8 L V6 gave way to the 3.6 L Pentastar for 2012. Built in Toledo, alongside the new JL during 2018.[3]

TJ
1997–2006
Brought back round headlamps and replaced leaf springs with coil springs at both ends. The Rubicon, with locking axles and a 4:1 transfer case, arrived for 2003 and the long-wheelbase Unlimited in 2004. Built in Toledo, Ohio.[2]

Takata airbag inflator replacement
Passenger front airbag inflators on 2007–2012 (S43) and 2014–2016 (V01) models can rupture in a crash. Transport Canada notes the Canadian climate slows the degradation, but confirm the replacement on a used Wrangler.[10][11]

Fender liners could wear through brake tubes
The front inner fender liners could rub on the brake tubes and cause a partial loss of braking at one wheel. Dealers trim the liners and replace any tubes with damaged corrosion coating (K13).[12]

Heated mirror wiring could corrode and short
On Wranglers with power heated mirrors, a connector inside the door could corrode and short, causing smoke or a fire. Dealers modify the wiring and add a water shield (P61).[13]

Violent front-end shake after bumps
Owners have reported a severe front-end shake at highway speed after hitting a bump, often called "death wobble", in many NHTSA complaints, especially for 2007–2008 and 2018 models. Have a shop inspect the steering and front suspension if it happens.[19][20][21][22]

Manual transmission clutch could overheat and break
On 3.6 L models with the 6-speed manual, the clutch pressure plate could overheat and break, possibly cracking the transmission case. A software update limited power first (Y01), then the clutch was replaced (19A).[14][15]

Power steering pump connection could overheat
The electric hydraulic power steering pump connection could loosen, overheat and melt, a fire risk even when parked. Until repaired, park outside and away from buildings; dealers replace the pump and wiring as needed (21D).[17]

4xe high-voltage battery fire risk
A fault inside the plug-in hybrid battery could cause a fire even when parked. Until the latest repair (68C) is done, do not charge the vehicle and park it outdoors away from buildings; earlier fixes needed repeating.[16]

4xe windshield defrost software
A software problem could keep the windshield defroster on 4xe models from working properly, so they did not meet Canadian rules. Dealers update the hybrid control software (04B).[18]

Issue, risk and remedy
Issue. On certain vehicles, a software problem could cause the rearview camera image not to display when the transmission is shifted into reverse. Canadian regulations require the rearview image to display when the vehicle is reversing. Note: This recall also affects Grand Cherokee L models and Grand Wagoneer L models.
Safety risk. A rearview camera image that doesn't display could reduce a driver's ability to see behind the vehicle while backing up. This could increase the risk of a crash.
Corrective action. FCA Canada will notify owners in writing and send a wireless over-the-air software update to eligible vehicles to update the radio software. Alternatively, you may schedule an appointment to have the update performed at an FCA dealership.

Issue, risk and remedy
Issue. On certain vehicles, the connection for the electric hydraulic power steering pump (EHPSP) could become loose. If this happens, the EHPSP connection could overheat and melt.
Safety risk. Wiring that overheats and melts can create a fire risk, even while the vehicle is parked and turned off.
Corrective action. To reduce the safety risk, FCA recommends that you should park your vehicle outside and away from other vehicles or buildings until the recall repairs are completed. FCA Canada will notify owners in writing and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to inspect and, if necessary, replace the EHPSP and the wiring.

Issue. On a small number of vehicles, the upper tether anchorage for installing a child car seat may not have been properly welded to the right-hand (passenger side) second-row seatback frame. As a result, the child seat tether strap could detach in a crash.
Safety risk. A child seat that is not properly secured could increase the risk of injury in a crash.

Issue, risk and remedy
Issue. On certain vehicles, the engine may not have been manufactured properly. As a result, the engine could make abnormal noises and a warning light may turn on. If you continue to drive the vehicle with these symptoms, the engine could fail. Note: This recall only affects plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models.
Safety risk. An engine failure could cause a sudden loss of power to the wheels and/or increase the risk of a vehicle fire. Both issues could increase the risk of a crash or injury.
Corrective action. FCA Canada will notify owners in writing and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to update the powertrain control module software. This software will monitor the engine and warn you if it detects a problem. If you see this warning, you should contact a dealership to arrange for the replacement of the engine.

On certain vehicles, there could be a problem inside the high-voltage battery that can cause a fire, even while parked with the ignition off. Note: This recall only affects 4xe plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models. This recall replaces Transport Canada recall no. 2024-566.
Safety risk. The vehicle could catch fire, even while parked and turned off.
Corrective action. To reduce the safety risk, FCA advises not to charge your vehicle, and to park it outdoors and away from other vehicles or structures until the recall repairs have been completed. Issue, risk and remedy
Issue. Under certain conditions, the clutch pressure plate could overheat and break. If this happens, the pressure plate may also crack or break the transmission case. This could cause debris to fall from the vehicle. Note: This recall only affects certain vehicles equipped with a 3.6 L engine and a manual transmission. Vehicles repaired under FCA Canada recalls Y01, Y03 and Y07 (Transport Canada recall 2021-035) also require this repair.
Safety risk. Debris from an overheated and fractured pressure plate could contact nearby parts and increase the risk of a fire. Parts that fall from the vehicle could create a road hazard for others and increase the risk of injury.
Corrective action. FCA Canada will notify owners by mail and advise you to tale your vehicle to a dealership to replace the clutch assembly. The dealer will also inspect and, if necessary, update the instrument panel cluster and powertrain control module software.

If you shift to reverse while the computer is resetting, the rearview camera image will not appear on the display. On certain vehicles, the right and left front inner fender liners could contact the right front and left rear brake tubes respectively, which could cause a partial loss of braking at the affected wheel. A partial loss of braking could result in a crash causing property damage, personal injury or death.
Corrective action. Dealers will trim the front inner fender liners and replace the retaining fasteners. In addition, the right front and left rear brake tubes will be inspected and brake tubes found to have the corrosion protection coating compromised will be replaced.

Issue, risk and remedy
Issue. On certain vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, operating under rigorous off-road conditions could cause the transmission fluid temperature to elevate to the point of causing transmission failure. Should the transmission fluid boil over, it may come into contact with a hot engine or exhaust component and cause a fire which could result in property damage, personal injury or death.
Corrective action. Dealers will install a "HOTOIL" message in the instrument cluster and a chime to indicate elevated transmission fluid temperature.

Issue. On certain vehicles equipped with manual transmissions, a defect in the clutch interlock switch could allow the starter to engage without depressing the clutch pedal. If recommended starting procedures are not followed, this could cause unintended vehicle movement, which could result in injury and/or damage to property.
Corrective action. Dealers will replace the clutch interlock switch.

- The 4xe defrost recall was issued because the affected vehicles did not meet Canadian regulations, which makes it worth confirming on any used 4xe before a Calgary winter.[18]
- The two-wheel-drive JK Unlimited offered from 2007 to 2010 was a U.S. option; four-wheel drive became standard on every Unlimited from 2011.[3]
- Canadian Black Book named the Wrangler the best at holding its value in its class three years running, for the 2011 to 2013 models.[1]
