Issue. On certain hybrid vehicles, a problem in the hybrid power control unit (HPCU) could cause it to overheat. Note: This problem could cause the vehicle not to start or to enter a reduced power mode and the malfunction indicator lamp to display.

Safety risk. An HPCU that overheats can create a fire risk.

Corrective action. Hyundai will notify owners in writing and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to update the HPCU software.

Issue. Hyundai Auto Canada is conducting an extended warranty campaign for certain vehicles as water could enter the horn assembly and cause the horn's electrical contacts to corrode. As a result, the horn may not work properly or at all.

Safety risk. A horn that doesn't work properly could prevent a driver from warning others of a danger and create an unsafe situation.

Corrective action. To reduce the safety risk, Hyundai advises you to test the horn regularly. Hyundai will notify owners in writing and advise you to contact a dealership if your horn doesn't work properly. Hyundai will provide an extended warranty of 10 years/200 000 km to replace the horn for free if it fails.

Issue. On certain vehicles, the rearview camera may not have been manufactured properly. Over time, the camera could fail and cause the rearview camera image not to display. Canadian regulations require the rearview image to display when the vehicle is reversing. Note: For the Santa Fe model, this recall affects both Santa Fe and Santa Fe Hybrid models. For the Elantra model, this recall affects both Elantra and Elantra Hybrid models.

Safety risk. A rearview camera image that doesn't display could reduce a driver's ability to see behind the vehicle while backing up. This could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective action. Hyundai will notify owners in writing and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to replace the rearview camera.

Issue. On certain vehicles, the high-pressure fuel pump could fail. If this happens, the engine may run rough and the check engine light may turn on. This could also cause a sudden loss of engine power while driving. Note: For the Elantra, Kona and Veloster models, this recall only affects the N performance versions.

Safety risk. A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective action. Hyundai will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to update the engine control module software. The high-pressure fuel pump will be replaced, if necessary.

Issue. On certain vehicles, the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve may not have been manufactured properly. As a result, the EGR valve could short circuit and cause a loss of power to the wheels.

Safety risk. A sudden loss of power to the wheels could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective action. Hyundai will notify owners in writing and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to replace the EGR valve.

Issue. On certain Elantra hybrid models, the vehicle could slowly accelerate after the brake pedal is released. Note: This problem can only happen under certain conditions after the vehicle enters "fail-safe" mode.

Safety risk. A vehicle that accelerates on its own could create the risk of a crash.

Corrective action. Hyundai will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to update the motor control unit (MCU) software.

Issue. On certain vehicles, the circuit board for the transmission electric oil pump may be damaged. As a result, the circuit board could short circuit and overheat, and various electrical systems may not work properly.

Safety risk. A short circuit could create the risk of a fire.

Corrective action. Hyundai will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to inspect the transmission electric oil pump controller, and replace it as necessary. Hyundai recommends parking your vehicle outside and away from other vehicles or buildings until the recall repairs are completed.

Issue. On certain vehicles, a fault in the transmission oil pump can cause the vehicle to enter "fail-safe mode". When this happens, a programming error can cause a sudden loss of power to the wheels after 20-30 seconds. Note: This recall only affects certain vehicles equipped with an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT).

Safety risk. A sudden loss of power to the wheels could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective action. Hyundai will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealership to inspect and, if necessary, replace the transmission. The dealer will also update the transmission control unit software.

Issue. On certain vehicles, the plastic emblem on the steering wheel airbag cover could detach and become a projectile when the airbag inflates in a crash.

Safety risk. Projectiles in the occupant compartment could increase the risk of an injury.

Corrective action. Hyundai will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealership to replace the steering wheel airbag.

Issue. On certain vehicles, there may be a problem with the driver and front passenger seat belt pretensioners. As a result, the seat belt pretensioners could explode in a crash. If this happens, small pieces of metal could hit people in the vehicle. Note: This recall affects Elantra and Elantra Hybrid models, and replaces recalls R0209 (Transport Canada No. 2022-098) and R0200 (Transport Canada No. 2021-627). Vehicles that were repaired under those recalls also require this repair.

Safety risk. A seat belt pretensioner that explodes could create a risk of injury.

Corrective action. Hyundai will notify owners by mail and instruct you to bring your vehicle to a dealership to install a protective cap over the driver and front passenger's seat belt pretensioners.

Issue. Hyundai is conducting a special service campaign that provides anti-corrosion treatment to certain underbody components. Over time, components under the vehicle, including brake lines could corrode. If this happens, a brake line could fail and leak. A brake fluid leak can result in reduced braking.

Safety risk. Reduced braking can cause an extended stopping distance and increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective action. Hyundai will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to inspect the underbody, including the brake lines. The dealer will apply an anti-corrosion treatment to certain parts, and replace the brake lines if necessary.

Issue. Hyundai Auto Canada is conducting a Product Improvement Campaign that provides an update to the engine control module to detect potential problems before an engine fails. An engine failure would cause a sudden loss of power with an inability to restart. Note: This only affects certain vehicles equipped with a 2.0 L Nu GDI engine. For the Sonata model, only the Sonata Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) models are affected by this campaign. This is an expansion of R0180 (Transport Canada #2021-575). Any vehicle that received a software update under campaign R0180 does not require this update.

For the Sonata model, only the Sonata Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) models are affected by this campaign. All vehicles previously included in TC # 2021-034 are now part of this new campaign.

Issue. On certain vehicles, the engine's piston oil rings may be defective. This can cause engine wear that can lead to increased oil consumption. Eventually, this can create abnormal engine noise and the oil pressure warning light may turn on. If you continue to drive the vehicle with these symptoms, the engine could fail. Note: This only affects vehicles equipped with a 2.0 L Nu MPI engine.

Corrective action. Hyundai will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the engine. The engine will be replaced, if necessary. Hyundai is also developing a Piston-ring Noise Sensing System (PNSS) software update to be installed when available; it will alert the driver of potential damage before an engine failure occurs.

Issue. On certain cars, the wheel lug nuts were not properly tightened during assembly. This could cause the nuts to loosen or fall off, and could result in a wheel separating from the car. Note: For the Ioniq model, this recall only involves the Ioniq PHEV (Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle) version.

Safety risk. A wheel separation could increase the risk of a crash. A wheel that detaches from a vehicle could create a hazard for other drivers and nearby people.

Corrective action. The company will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their car to a dealer to ensure the front and rear wheel nuts are properly tightened.

Issue. On certain Elantra GT models, the sunroof motor may have been programmed incorrectly and may be unable to detect an obstruction while closing the sunroof. This may cause the sunroof not to retract when a person or an object is in its path, which could increase the risk of injury.

Corrective action. Dealers will inspect the sunroof motor and replace it if necessary.

Issue. On certain vehicles, a connection at the electric power steering (EPS) motor may have been damaged at time of assembly. This could lead to a loss of the steering assist. A loss of power steering assist could unexpectedly increase steering effort which would increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.

Corrective action. Dealers will replace the EPS motor.

Issue. On certain vehicles, the diaphragm in brake booster may unseat due to a manufacturing defect. This could result in a vacuum leak in the brake system and a reduction or loss in power brake assist, which would increase pedal effort, and extend stopping distances, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.

Corrective action. Dealers will replace the vehicle brake system’s booster assembly.

Issue. On certain vehicles, a manufacturing error could cause the second stage of the driver’s frontal airbag to fail to deploy. This would increase the risk of injury to the driver in a crash severe enough to warrant the deployment of the airbag`s second stage.

Corrective action. Dealers will replace the driver’s frontal airbag module.

Issue. On certain vehicles, the driver-front airbag inflator could rupture when the airbag deploys in a crash. If this happens, the airbag may not fully inflate and fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants.

Issue. On certain vehicles, a part in the trunk release latch could fail. If this happens, the emergency trunk release located inside the trunk may not work properly. This could prevent a person that is trapped inside the trunk from opening it.

Safety risk. If a person is closed inside the trunk compartment, they may not be able to get out. This could create a risk of injury.

Corrective action. Hyundai will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to replace the trunk latch assembly.

Issue. On certain vehicles, brake fluid could leak into the control module for the antilock brake system (ABS) and cause it to short circuit. Issue. On certain vehicles equipped with an anti-lock brake system (ABS), moisture can enter the ABS control module and cause a short circuit.

Safety risk. A short circuit could create a fire risk. This can happen even if the vehicle is parked.

Corrective action. Hyundai will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to install a relay to power off the ABS control module when the vehicle is turned off.

Issue. On certain cars, there may be a problem in the airbag control unit that can cause with airbags to deploy without a crash. As a result, the front airbags and seat belt pretensioners could deploy when the vehicle is stopped or moving at slow speeds.

Safety risk. Airbags or seat belt pretensioners that deploy without a crash could create a risk of injury and may also increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective action. Hyundai will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your car to a dealer to update the software for the airbag control unit.

Issue. Update - October 21, 2024: This parts recovery campaign was re-opened and its scope expanded. Hyundai Auto Canada is conducting a parts recovery campaign targeting 2009 Elantra and Elantra Touring vehicles built between January 15 and April 15, 2009. Owners of subject vehicles will be notified by mail and the driver frontal airbag module will be replaced at no charge. The parts are being recovered to aid in Hyundai's analysis in support of Transport Canada defect investigation file no. 3280-38-18. Note: No safety defect has been identified with these vehicles and this action is not being conducted under the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Issue. On certain vehicles, the frontal air bags and seatbelt pretensioners may inadvertently deploy while the vehicle is stopped or moving at slow speeds due to the improper calibration of the Airbag Control Unit (ACU). Unintended airbag / seatbelt pretensioner deployment, in a non-warranted (non-impact) situation, could startle the driver, and could result in a vehicle crash causing injury and/or property damage.

Corrective action. Dealers will reprogram the Airbag Control Unit (ACU).

Issue. Certain vehicles equipped with electric power steering (EPS) may experience a sudden loss of power steering assist that could occur at any time while driving. If the electronic control unit (ECU) were to sense a discrepancy in the torque sensing circuitry of the steering system, and indicator lamp would illuminate in the instrument cluster to inform the driver that steering assist is no longer provided. Steering control could be maintained, as the vehicle will revert to a manual steering mode, but would require greater driver effort. The sudden change in steering may increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or property damage.

Corrective action. Dealers will update the electric power steering (EPS) control unit.

Issue. On certain vehicles equipped with side curtain air bags, a bracket securing the headliner could become dislodged during side curtain airbag deployment and be propelled toward vehicle occupants, increasing the risk of injury.

Corrective action. Dealers will install industrial adhesive strips to the vehicle headliner.

Issue. On certain vehicles, the stop lamp switch may fail and cause intermittent operation of the brake lights. Failure of the brake lights to illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed could result in a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury.

Corrective action. Dealers will replace the switch.

Issue. On certain vehicles, the stop lamp switch may fail and cause intermittent operation of the brake lights. Failure of the brake lights to illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed could result in a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury.

Corrective action. Dealers will replace the switch.

Issue. On certain vehicles, the stop lamp switch may have been incorrectly installed during vehicle assembly. This could prevent proper brake lamp operation. Failure of the brake lamps to illuminate when the brakes are applied may result in the following road users being unaware of the driver's intentions, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury or death. A malfunction of the switch may also cause the brake lamps to remain illuminated when the brake pedal is released. Additionally, a faulty switch may affect the operation of the brake-transmission shift interlock on automatic transmission-equipped vehicles so that the transmission shifter would not be able to be shifted out of PARK position. It may also cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) light to illuminate, and it may not deactivate the cruise control when the brake pedal is depressed.

Corrective action. Dealers will replace the stop lamp switch assembly.

Issue. On certain vehicles operated in areas of heavy road salt usage (Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland & Labrador), road salt can collect in the outboard portion of the front lower control arm and may result in internal corrosion leading to thinning of the steel in the lower control arms. In severe cases, the corrosion may progress to the point where the lower control arm's upper and lower panels become perforated. A perforated front lower control arm may fracture between its ball joint attachment and the forward and rearward pivot attachments to the chassis. This could result in a loss of vehicle control and a crash causing property damage, personal injury or death.

Corrective action. Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the front lower control arms. Should the control arms not require replacement, drainage holes will be added, as well as treatment with rust-proofing material to arrest the corrosion process.

Issue. On certain vehicles, spilled liquid seeping through the console opening for the parking brake lever could contaminate the airbag control module connector that is located under the center console. This could result in an airbag Warning Light illumination. Should the owner decide not have the airbag system serviced at the time, it may affect the driver & passenger frontal airbags and prevent airbag deployment during a crash. Non-deployment of the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) airbags increases the risk of personal injuries or death in certain crash conditions.

Corrective action. Dealers will install a protective cover over the airbag control module connector.

Issue. On certain vehicles, the inner tie rod assemblies may crack and eventually break. Such a failure would result in separation of a tie rod from the steering rack, causing a loss of steering control which could result in a crash.

Corrective action. Dealers will replace the steering rack assembly.

Issue. On certain non- ABS vehicles located in Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland, after sustained exposure to temperatures below -30 degrees Celsius, the power brake booster diaphragm may lose elasticity. After the first application following a sustained period of non-operation at temperatures below -30 degrees Celsius, the reduced elasticity of the diaphragm prevents the brake booster vacuum valve from fully closing. Therefore, the booster is unable to replenish vacuum and braking assist is reduced. The brakes operate, but require higher than normal brake pedal application effort, which may result in increased stopping distances. Normal brake booster operation returns as the brake booster diaphragm becomes warmer, approximately 10 minutes after the engine is started.

Corrective action. Dealers will replace the brake booster assembly.

Issue. On certain vehicles, a fuel vapour tube hose clamp may not be positioned properly. The spring-type hose clamp contains ears that may be squeezed together with a tool to increase the diameter of the clamp to allow it to be installed on the vapour tube hose. Hyundai's specification requires the vapour tube hose clamp ears to not be directed toward the fuel tank. If a vehicle contains a vapour tube hose clamp that is mispositioned so one of its ears is facing toward the fuel tank and that vehicle is involved in a severe high speed crash, the damage to the vehicle may cause the mispositioned clamp ear to damage the fuel tank and fuel spillage may occur. Fuel spillage in the presence of an ignition source may result in a fire.

Corrective action. Dealer will inspect the position of the vapour tube hose clamp ears and will correctly position the clamp, if necessary.

Issue. On certain vehicles, the fuel tank assembly valve may not close properly. If a vehicle with a fuel tank assembly valve that is not properly closed were to roll over, fuel spillage could occur. Fuel spillage in the presence of an ignition source may result in a fire.

Corrective action. Dealer will install an additional fuel tank assembly valve.

Issue. On certain vehicles, the rear brake tubes may contact the steering gear box mounting brackets resulting in rear brake tube wear and corrosion. Severe rear brake tube wear and corrosion may result in brake fluid leakage reducing braking capability.

Corrective action. Dealer will reposition the rear brake tubes, install clips to control the position of the tubes and apply anti-corrosion material where contact with the steering gear box mounting brackets may have occurred.

Issue. Certain vehicles may experience intermittent low speed engine stalling. This may occur if the Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor electrical signal is interrupted as a result of engine vibration transmitted to the MAF Sensor connector wiring harness. Intermittent low speed engine stalling may result in a vehicle crash.

Corrective action. Dealers will replace the MAF Sensor connector and a portion of the wiring harness to incorporate a new relief loop in the harness to reduce the vibration that may be transmitted to the sensor connector.
