Honda Pilot
In Canada: generations, trims, common issues, recalls and fuel costs
This guide covers the Honda Pilot across 4 generations from model year 2003. Transport Canada lists 43 recalls for it since the 2003 model year, the latest issued in July 2026 (list read ). The first-generation Pilot was built at Honda of Canada Mfg. in Alliston, Ontario, until April 2007; production then moved to Lincoln, Alabama.
Overview
The Pilot is Honda’s largest SUV, a three-row crossover with seating for up to eight, built mainly for North America since the 2003 model year. The first generation was assembled in Alliston, Ontario, until 2007; later ones come from Lincoln, Alabama. Every generation has used a 3.5 L V6, and every Pilot Honda Canada currently sells has all-wheel drive, so it is a natural fit for families facing Alberta winters. The current Canadian line-up runs Sport, EX-L, TrailSport, Touring and Black Edition. When buying used, check the Takata airbag recalls on 2003–2015 models, the connecting rod bearing recall on 2016–2018 V6s and the 2026 rear subframe corrosion recall that covers 2016–2022 Pilots.

Generations
Newest first. Years are model years; “on” means the generation is still in production.
-
Fourth generation (YG1/YG2)
2023 on
The largest and most powerful Honda SUV so far, with a new 285 hp DOHC V6 and a 10-speed automatic. The TrailSport adds all-terrain tires, skid plates and more ground clearance. A 2026 refresh brought a bigger screen and a quieter cabin.[1][2][3]
-
Third generation (YF5/YF6)
2016–2022
Sleeker and about 140 kg lighter, with a direct-injected 280 hp V6 and a 6-speed or ZF 9-speed automatic. Refreshed for 2019; the 9-speed became standard for 2021, and Sport and TrailSport trims arrived for 2022.[1][6][8][9]
-
Second generation (YF3/YF4)
2009–2015
Bigger and boxier, built in Lincoln, Alabama, with a 250 hp V6 and a 5-speed automatic. It was refreshed for 2012, and Canada offered it in front- and four-wheel-drive LX form as well as EX, EX-L and Touring.[1][5]
-
First generation (YF1/YF2)
2003–2008
Launched with a 3.5 L V6, a 5-speed automatic and eight seats. Production was in Alliston, Ontario, until April 2007, when it moved to Lincoln, Alabama. The 2006 update added a front-wheel-drive version with cylinder deactivation.[1]

Common issues
Problems a source documents for this model, tagged by what kind of source it is. What each tag means:
- Recall
- A safety recall. Transport Canada’s list further down has the recall itself, and a dealer can tell you from your VIN whether it applies to your vehicle.
-
Takata airbag inflator recalls
Driver and passenger frontal airbag inflators in the first two generations were recalled because they can rupture in a crash. Any Pilot in this range without a completed repair should go to a Honda dealer for the free replacement.[10][11][12][13]
-
Second-gear overheating in the automatic transmission
Heat could build up between second gears, chipping teeth and in rare cases locking the transmission. Dealers modified the oil cooler line and replaced transmissions showing heat damage.[14]
-
V6 connecting rod bearing wear
On some 2016 and 2018 Pilots (Transport Canada does not list the 2017), the V6 connecting rod bearings can wear early, causing knocking and a warning light and, if ignored, engine failure. Dealers inspect the engine and replace damaged parts under the recall.[15]
-
Hood latch striker can separate
The hood latch striker can come away from the hood, so the hood could fly open while driving; a loose or vibrating hood is the warning sign. Dealers add a support plate or replace the hood.[16]
-
Low-pressure fuel pump failure
The in-tank fuel pump can fail, so the engine runs rough, will not start or loses power while driving. Honda replaces the pump under recall.[18]
-
Rear subframe corrosion
Rust at the rear suspension mounting points on the subframe can let suspension parts fail. This 2026 recall covers about 136,000 Canadian vehicles; dealers fit a reinforcement kit or replace the subframe.[17]
-
Engine stall from fuel injection software
A software fault in the fuel injection control unit can stall the engine while driving. Dealers update the software.[19]

Issue, risk and remedy
Issue. On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, may eventually degrade the propellant contained in the airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. If the airbag inflator ruptures, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants or cause damage to the airbag assembly, preventing its proper function. Note: This is a new recall campaign that includes vehicles that had an airbag inflator replaced under a previous recall or had a replacement airbag installed. The previous recall provided an interim (short-term) repair. Interim repair parts must be replaced with the final repair parts provided in this recall.
Safety risk. If the vehicle is involved in a crash requiring an airbag deployment, the airbag inflator could rupture and create a risk of injury.
Corrective action. Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to replace the driver and/or passenger-front airbag inflator. Note: The Canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. This recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk. It is expected that all airbag inflators will be replaced before their function would be affected.

This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. As a result, if the vehicle were involved in a collision that warrants airbag deployment, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants, and the airbag assembly could be damaged, preventing proper function. These issues could increase the risk of injury.
Corrective action. Dealers will replace the passenger frontal airbag inflator. For the GL1800 model, dealers will replace the airbag module. Note: Canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. The recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk, and is expected to replace airbag inflators before their function would be affected.

Issue. Certain operating conditions can result in heat build-up between the countershaft and secondary shaft second gears in the automatic transmission, eventually leading to gear tooth chipping or, in very rare cases, gear breakage can occur. Gear failure could result in transmission lock-up.
Corrective action. On vehicles with 24 000 kms or less, the dealer will update the transmission with a simple revision to the oil cooler return line to increase lubrication to second gear. On vehicles with more than 24 000 kms, the dealer will inspect the transmission to identify gears that have already experienced discoloration due to overheating. If discolouration exists, the transmission will be replaced. If discolouration is not present, the dealer will perform the revision to the oil cooler return line.

Fuel economy and cost
Natural Resources Canada’s combined ratings (55% city, 45% highway driving) for the newest model years it has rated. NRCan rates every drivetrain, transmission and package separately, so each row gives the range across them. The yearly cost assumes 20,000 km a year, the distance NRCan’s own fuel consumption search tool assumes, at Statistics Canada’s average self-serve price in Calgary for August 2026: regular 162.3¢/L, premium 188.4¢/L, diesel 210.6¢/L. Each rating is costed at the fuel NRCan rated it on. How far and how you drive will move it.

Canada notes
- The first-generation Pilot was built at Honda of Canada Mfg. in Alliston, Ontario, until April 2007; production then moved to Lincoln, Alabama.[1]
- Every 2023–2026 Pilot sold by Honda Canada has all-wheel drive, and in the 2023 launch line-up Hill Descent Control and heated front seats were standard from the base Sport up.[2][3]
- Canadian trims differ from US ones: the US Elite trim does not appear in the 2016, 2019 or 2022 Canadian line-ups, and the Black Edition has topped the Canadian range since 2019.[1][6][7][9]
- The rear subframe rust recall announced in 2026 matters for Alberta’s salted winter roads; any 2016–2022 Pilot should be checked by VIN at a Honda dealer.[17]
