Ford Ranger
In Canada: generations, trims, common issues, recalls and fuel costs
This guide covers the Ford Ranger across 3 generations from model year 1998. Transport Canada lists 61 recalls for it since the 2000 model year, the latest issued in August 2026 (list read ). The FX4 off-road model stayed on sale in Canada for 2010 and 2011, after the United States had dropped it.
Overview
The Ranger is Ford's smaller pickup. From 1983 to 2011 it was a simple, body-on-frame compact truck built in the United States, a practical size for city driveways and light hauling. After sitting out the 2012–2018 model years it came back for 2019 as a mid-size truck based on the global T6 Ranger, with a 2.3 L turbo four and a 10-speed automatic, and a redesign for 2024 added a V6 option and the Raptor. Current Canadian Rangers are four-door SuperCrews with four-wheel drive on every trim. For owners, the documented items are a speed control switch fire recall on early-2000s trucks, Takata airbag inflator recalls on 2004–2011 models, a block heater recall on 2019–2024 trucks, and owner reports of rough shifting from the early 10-speed.

A redesign engineered with North America in mind, adding an optional 2.7 L EcoBoost V6 and a Raptor model with a 3.0 L twin-turbo V6. Still built in Wayne, Michigan.[1][2][3]
-
Fourth generation (T6-based)
2019–2023
The Ranger returned after an eight-year gap as a mid-size truck adapted from the Australian-developed global Ranger, offered only as a SuperCab or four-door SuperCrew with a 2.3 L EcoBoost and 10-speed automatic. Built at Michigan Assembly in Wayne, Michigan.[1][2][3]
-
Third generation (North America)
1998–2011
A stiffer frame, independent front suspension and rack-and-pinion steering, with rear-hinged back doors on the SuperCab from 1999. Built in St. Paul, Minnesota (and in Edison, New Jersey until 2004). The 2011 model year was the last for retail sale in Canada and the United States.[1]

Common issues
Problems a source documents for this model, tagged by what kind of source it is. What each tag means:
- Recall
- A safety recall. Transport Canada’s list further down has the recall itself, and a dealer can tell you from your VIN whether it applies to your vehicle.
- Owner complaint pattern
- Owners have reported it in complaints. A pattern in reports is not a recall, and not a finding that every vehicle has the problem.
-
Speed control deactivation switch could overheat
The cruise control deactivation switch could overheat, smoke or burn and start an underhood fire, parked or driving. Ford recalled these trucks more than once; dealers fit a new switch or a fused wiring harness.[8][9]
-
Takata airbag inflator replacement
The front airbag inflators in these Rangers can degrade and rupture in a crash. Transport Canada notes the Canadian climate slows the degradation, but the inflators are being replaced as a precaution, so confirm the work was done on any used truck.[10][11][12]
-
Harsh or erratic shifting from the 10-speed automatic
Owners have reported hard shifts, hesitation pulling away and unexpected gear changes in NHTSA complaints about the 10-speed automatic. A dealer can check for software updates and fault codes.[6][7]
-
Engine block heater could leak coolant and short
The block heater could leak coolant and short-circuit when plugged in, which is a fire risk. Ford advises not using the block heater until a dealer replaces it (recall 25SA4), or the dealer can disable it permanently.[13]

Issue, risk and remedy
Issue. This recall is for certain vehicles that had the driver-front and/or passenger-front airbag inflator replaced after a collision or theft. An obsolete airbag may have been installed. On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, may eventually degrade the propellant contained in the driver-front airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. If the airbag inflator ruptures, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants or cause damage to the airbag assembly, preventing its proper function.
Safety risk. If the vehicle is involved in a crash requiring an airbag deployment, the airbag inflator could rupture and create a risk of injury.
Corrective action. The company will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a Ford dealer to inspect the driver and/or passenger airbag inflator or module and replace it, if necessary. Note: The Canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. This recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk. It is expected that all airbag inflators will be replaced before their function would be affected.

Each rating is costed at the fuel NRCan rated it on. How far and how you drive will move it.

Canada notes
- The FX4 off-road model stayed on sale in Canada for 2010 and 2011, after the United States had dropped it.[1]
- There was no Ranger in Canada for the 2012 to 2018 model years; Ford focused on the F-150 until the mid-size Ranger arrived for 2019.[1][2]
- The 2025 Canadian Ranger is sold as a four-door SuperCrew with four-wheel drive standard on all trims, and an engine block heater is optional.[5]
- Transport Canada's file for the 2019–2024 block heater recall lists about 139,000 affected vehicles across the Ford models it covers, so check that the repair is done before relying on the block heater this winter.[13]
