Ford Explorer

In Canada: generations, trims, common issues, recalls and fuel costs

This guide covers the Ford Explorer across 5 generations from model year 1995. Transport Canada lists 96 recalls for it since the 2000 model year, the latest issued in August 2026 (list read ). Canada did not get the base Explorer sold in the U.S.: Ford.ca's 2019 and 2021 lineups started at the XLT.

Overview

The Explorer is Ford's mid-size family SUV, on sale since the 1991 model year and Ford's first five-door SUV. It stayed a truck-based, body-on-frame SUV with optional V8 power until 2010, became a front-drive-based unibody crossover with a third row in 2011, and moved to a rear-drive-based platform with a 10-speed automatic in 2020. In Canada the current Explorer comes with four-wheel drive on every trim, which suits Alberta winters and towing a small camper. Owners should know the documented weak points: rear suspension toe links that could break on 2011–2019 models, an internally mounted water pump on the 3.5 L V6 engines, a rear axle bolt recall on 2020–2022 models, and block heater and fuel pump recalls on recent ones.

Generations

Newest first. Years are model years; “on” means the generation is still in production.

  1. Sixth generation (U625)

    2020 on

Moved to the rear-drive-based CD6 platform shared with the Lincoln Aviator, with a 10-speed automatic and the 400 hp (298 kW) ST. A 2025 refresh brought a 13.2-inch screen and a new trim lineup. Built in Chicago.[1]

  2. Fifth generation (U502)

    2011–2019

Switched to a unibody crossover design with three rows and EcoBoost options, built in Chicago, Illinois. A 2016 facelift added the 2.3 L EcoBoost and the Platinum trim.[1]

  3. Fourth generation (U251)

    2006–2010

A new, stiffer frame under an updated body, with stability control and tire pressure monitoring standard and a 6-speed automatic for the V8. The last body-on-frame Explorer.[1]

  4. Third generation (U152)

    2002–2005

A ground-up redesign that ended the Ranger link, with independent rear suspension, an optional third row and a 4.6 L V8 option. Roll Stability Control became standard for 2005. Built in Louisville and St. Louis.[1]

  5. Second generation (UN105/150)

    1995–2001

Still related to the Ranger underneath, with a 4.0 L V6 or a 5.0 L V8 and a ControlTrac four-wheel-drive system. The 2001 model was the last five-door of this generation. Built in Louisville, Kentucky and St. Louis, Missouri.[1]

Common issues

Problems a source documents for this model, tagged by what kind of source it is. What each tag means:

Recall
A safety recall. Transport Canada’s list further down has the recall itself, and a dealer can tell you from your VIN whether it applies to your vehicle.
Documented
Documented by the sources cited, such as a manufacturer program, a court-approved settlement or a reputable publication.
  • Speed control deactivation switch could overheat

    Recall Model years 2000–2002

The cruise control deactivation switch could overheat, smoke or burn and start an underhood fire. Ford recalled these Explorers more than once; dealers fit a new switch or a fused wiring harness.[9][10]

  • Timing chain rattle on the 4.0 L SOHC V6

    Documented Model years 2000–2010

The original timing chain guides on early engines could wear or break, giving a rattle most noticeable on a cold start; later high-mileage engines can develop it too. Ford issued a TSB and a redesigned front chain cassette, but a failed rear chain or guide means removing the engine, so the repair is expensive.[1][6]

  • Rear suspension toe links could break

    Recall Model years 2011–2019

Rear toe links could break, or their outer ball joints seize and then break, causing a sudden loss of stability; rough roads make it more likely. Ford recalled several ranges of years (19S17, 21S32, 26S08) to fit improved links and inspect the knuckles.[11][12][13]

  • Internal water pump on the 3.5 L V6 engines

    Documented Model years 2011–2019

The water pump on the 3.5 L and 3.5 L EcoBoost V6s sits inside the engine and is driven by the timing chain, so a leak can put coolant into the oil and replacing it is a large job. A U.S. class action over the design was dismissed in 2020; watch for coolant loss or overheating.[1][7][8]

  • A-pillar trim could come loose

    Recall Model years 2011–2019

The exterior trim on either side of the windshield might not be attached properly and could fly off. Dealers inspect and replace it (24S02).[1][14]

  • Rear axle mounting bolt could break

    Recall Model years 2020–2022

A rear axle housing bolt could break, causing clunks and vibration and, in the worst case, a loss of drive or a vehicle that rolls in Park. Ford first changed software to set the parking brake in Park (22S27), then replaced the bushing and bolt (23S55).[15][16][19]

  • Block heater could leak coolant and short out

    Recall Model years 2016–2024

The block heater could leak coolant and short-circuit when plugged in, a fire risk. Ford advises not using it until a dealer replaces or disables it (25SA4).[17]

  • Low-pressure fuel pump could fail

    Recall Model years 2021–2022

The in-tank fuel pump could fail, causing rough running, a no-start or a sudden loss of power with the check engine light on. The recall (25S75) updates the powertrain control module software.[18]

Issue. On certain vehicles, the recall repairs completed by a Ford dealer during recalls 22S27 (Transport Canada recall no. 2022-198) and/or 23S16 (Transport Canada recall no. 2023-172) may not have been done correctly. As a result, another repair is required. On certain vehicles, a mounting bolt for the rear axle housing could break. If this happens, the axle housing can move and cause clunking or banging noises and vibrations from the rear of the vehicle. It could also cause the driveshaft and axle shafts to disconnect. This would result in a loss of power to the rear wheels and the vehicle could move when the transmission is in Park, if the parking brake is not used. Note: This recall only affects certain vehicles equipped with a 3.0 L or 3.3 L engine.

Safety risk. A parked vehicle that rolls away could create the risk of an injury or a crash. A loss of power to the wheels could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective action. Ford will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to update the engine control module (PCM) software to set the parking brake when the transmission is in the Park position.

Fuel economy and cost

Natural Resources Canada’s combined ratings (55% city, 45% highway driving) for the newest model years it has rated. NRCan rates every drivetrain, transmission and package separately, so each row gives the range across them. The yearly cost assumes 20,000 km a year, the distance NRCan’s own fuel consumption search tool assumes, at Statistics Canada’s average self-serve price in Calgary for August 2026: regular 162.3¢/L, premium 188.4¢/L, diesel 210.6¢/L. Each rating is costed at the fuel NRCan rated it on. How far and how you drive will move it.
