Ford Edge

In Canada: generations, trims, common issues, recalls and fuel costs

This guide covers the Ford Edge across 2 generations from model year 2007. Transport Canada lists 41 recalls for it since the 2007 model year, the latest issued in March 2026 (list read ). Built in Canada: all North American Edges came from Oakville Assembly in Oakville, Ontario, from the 2007 launch until production ended in April 2024.

Overview

The Edge was Ford's two-row mid-size crossover, slotted between the Escape and the Explorer, and a Canadian product: every North American Edge from the 2007 to the 2024 model year was built at Oakville Assembly in Ontario. It shared its underpinnings with the Fusion sedan, offered all-wheel drive, and moved from V6 engines to EcoBoost turbo engines over two generations, ending with the 2.7 L twin-turbo ST. Production stopped in April 2024 with no direct replacement, so every Edge on the road now is a used one. The documented items to check are Takata airbag inflator recalls on 2007–2010 models, the internally mounted water pump on the 3.5 L and 3.7 L V6s, and brake hose and shift cable recalls on 2015–2018 models.

Common issues

Problems a source documents for this model, tagged by what kind of source it is. What each tag means:

Recall
A safety recall. Transport Canada’s list further down has the recall itself, and a dealer can tell you from your VIN whether it applies to your vehicle.
Documented
Documented by the sources cited, such as a manufacturer program, a court-approved settlement or a reputable publication.
  • Takata airbag inflator replacement

    Recall Model years 2007–2010

The front airbag inflators can degrade and rupture in a crash. Transport Canada notes the Canadian climate slows the degradation, but the passenger (19S01) and driver (21S12) inflators are being replaced as a precaution; confirm the work on any used Edge.[9][10]

  • Internal water pump on the 3.5 L and 3.7 L V6

    Documented Model years 2007–2018

On these transverse V6 engines the water pump sits inside the engine and is driven by the timing chain, so a leak can put coolant into the oil and the repair is costly. Edge owners were among those in a U.S. class action that was dismissed in 2020; watch for unexplained coolant loss.[7][8]

  • Brake hoses could leak

    Recall Model years 2015–2018

The front brake hoses (20S42) and, in a later recall, the rear hoses (25S87) could fail and leak fluid, changing pedal feel and lengthening stops. A brake warning light may come on. Dealers replace or reroute the hoses.[11][12]

  • Transmission shift cable could detach

    Recall Model years 2015–2018

The shift cable bushing could fail so the transmission is not in the gear the shifter shows, and the vehicle could roll when the driver gets out. Dealers replace the bushing (22S43); use the parking brake every time.[13]

  • 2.7 L EcoBoost intake valves could break

    Recall Model years 2021

Some intake valves were not made properly and could break, making the engine run rough with the check engine light on before it fails. Dealers inspect and replace the engine if needed (24S55).[14]

  • Rear-view camera image may not show

    Recall Model years 2021–2024

Software faults, and in a later recall an overheating infotainment unit, could stop the reversing camera image from appearing. Both fixes are software updates, available over the air or at a dealer (25S49, 26S09).[15][16]

Issue. Certain vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 126 - Electronic Stability Control Systems. Vehicles that were brought to a dealer for service may have received an incorrect software update for the Antilock Brake System Stability Control system. The incorrect software disables the engine torque control of the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system, and if a fault were to occur in the stability control system, including Antilock Brake System (ABS), Traction Control (T/C), and ESC, no warning lamp/indicator would be displayed to the driver. Additionally, no warning lamp/indicator would be displayed when traction control is disabled, or when the Electric Parking Brake (EPB) is applied. A lack of visual warning to indicate these systems are not functioning would be contrary to the requirements of the standard, and could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.

Issue. On certain vehicles registered and operated in areas where road salt is used on the roadways during winter months for extended time periods (Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland-Labrador), corrosion may occur at the steering gear motor attachment bolts. Steering gear motor detachment from the gear housing could result in sudden loss of steering power assist. This would cause the Electronic Stability Control and Traction Control malfunction indicator lamps to illuminate. A vehicle experiencing a loss of steering power assist would revert to a manual steering mode which would require greater driver effort, especially at low vehicle speeds. A loss of steering power assist could ultimately result in a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury.

Corrective action. Dealers will apply sealer and replace the steering gear motor attachment bolts as required. If one or more of the steering gear motor attachment bolds are broken or missing, a new steering gear will be installed in the vehicle.

Issue. On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, may eventually degrade the propellant contained in the driver-front airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. If the airbag inflator ruptures, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants or cause damage to the airbag assembly, preventing its proper function.

Safety risk. If the vehicle is involved in a crash requiring an airbag deployment, the airbag inflator could rupture and create a risk of injury.

Corrective action. Ford will notify owners by mail. The corrective actions for this recall are under development. Note: The Canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. This recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk. It is expected that all airbag inflators will be replaced before their function would be affected.

Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to have the passenger-front airbag inflator replaced. Note: The Canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. This recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk. It is expected that all airbag inflators will be replaced before their function would be affected. Additional note: This recall supersedes recalls 2016-347 (Ford Safety Improvement Program 16S26), 2017-024 (Ford Recall 17S01) and 2018-035 (Ford Recall 18S01). Vehicles repaired under the previous recalls do not require repair under this recall.

Issue. Certain ACDelco Advantage wheel hub spindles, manufactured by Bearing Technologies Ltd., contain a defect which may affect vehicle safety. The spindles have studs with oversized protruding shoulders that may make assembling the part difficult with certain aftermarket brake rotors (original equipment rotors are not affected). If this difficulty in assembly is not heeded, the defect may cause a vibration of the vehicle or wobbling of the wheel on which the hub is installed. If a driver does not stop the vehicle, this may lead to a loss of vehicle control. Affected parts are ACDelco Advantage wheel hub spindles, Part No. 19360602 (BR930676K), sold between November 21, 2016 and October 2, 2017. Parts manufactured with these studs have any of the following LOT codes etched on the face of the spindle: FH38, FJ38, FN38, FP38, FS38, FV38, FY38, FZ38, and HC38. These parts fit exclusively on the models listed in this notice.

Corrective action. Bearing Tech will provide customers with a replacement ACDelco Advantage wheel spindle, Part No. 19385577 (518517). Owners should contact Bearing Tech at 800-677-3477 or send an email to recall@brgtec.com Note: This campaign is not being conducted under the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Fuel economy and cost

Natural Resources Canada’s combined ratings (55% city, 45% highway driving) for the newest model years it has rated. NRCan rates every drivetrain, transmission and package separately, so each row gives the range across them. The yearly cost assumes 20,000 km a year, the distance NRCan’s own fuel consumption search tool assumes, at Statistics Canada’s average self-serve price in Calgary for August 2026: regular 162.3¢/L, premium 188.4¢/L, diesel 210.6¢/L. Each rating is costed at the fuel NRCan rated it on. How far and how you drive will move it.

Canada notes

  • Built in Canada: all North American Edges came from Oakville Assembly in Oakville, Ontario, from the 2007 launch until production ended in April 2024.[1][2]
  • Ford.ca listed the ST-Line trim for the 2020 model year; Wikipedia records it as new for 2021 in the U.S. lineup.[1][5]
  • Transport Canada recalls for fuel tank bracket corrosion (2007–2010) and power steering motor bolt corrosion (2015–2016) covered only the heavy-salt provinces from Ontario east, so an Edge moved to Alberta from there may still need them.[17][18][19]
