BMW 3 Series

In Canada: generations, trims, common issues, recalls and fuel costs

This guide covers the BMW 3 Series from model year 1999: 5 generations, 14 trims, 13 engines and 8 documented common issues, each with its sources. Transport Canada lists 85 recalls for it since the 2000 model year, the latest issued in July 2026 (list read ). NRCan rates the 2026 3 Series at 8.0–8.2 L/100 km combined.

Overview

The BMW 3 Series is the compact sports sedan that has anchored BMW since 1975 and remains its best-selling line. Earlier generations also came as a coupe, convertible and Touring wagon; after the 2013 model year the two-door versions became the 4 Series. In Canada the car leans heavily on xDrive all-wheel drive: since the 2019 redesign every regular gasoline 3 Series sold here has been an xDrive model, and only the 330e plug-in hybrid and the M3 were offered with rear-wheel drive. Buyers range from professionals leasing a new 330i xDrive to enthusiasts keeping an older six-cylinder alive. For an Alberta owner the engine code matters most, because the E46 and E90 sixes, the early turbo sixes, the N20 four and the current B48 and B58 engines each have their own recall and repair history. An eighth generation arrives for the 2027 model year.

Generations

Newest first. Years are model years; “on” means the generation is still in production.

  1. Eighth generation (G50)

    2027 on

Announced by BMW Canada in September 2026 for the 2027 model year as the 330 xDrive and M350 xDrive, both with 48-volt mild-hybrid engines and standard xDrive. It shares the 3 Series family with the fully electric BMW i3 50 xDrive built on the Neue Klasse architecture.[1][15]

  2. Seventh generation (G20)

    2019–2026

Built in Munich and at BMW’s new San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico, which supplied markets including the US; in Canada it launched as the 330i xDrive, with the M340i xDrive added for 2020 and the 330e for 2021. A mid-2022 facelift brought the curved dual-screen dashboard.[5][24][25]

  3. Sixth generation (F30 sedan, F31 Touring, F34 Gran Turismo)

    2012–2018

Base models moved to the N20 2.0 L turbo four, the first four-cylinder gasoline 3 Series in the US since the E36 318i, and a 328d diesel and ActiveHybrid 3 joined the range. From 2016 the Canadian non-hybrid four-cylinder models were xDrive only; the update that year added the 340i and 330e plug-in hybrid, and the 330i followed for 2017.[4][19][21][22]

  4. Fifth generation (E90 sedan, E91 Touring, E92 coupe, E93 convertible)

    2006–2013

The 335i brought BMW its first mass-produced turbocharged gasoline six (N54), and all-wheel-drive models were renamed from xi to xDrive with the 2009 update. The sedan was replaced by the F30 for 2012, while the coupe and convertible stayed on sale in Canada through the 2013 model year.[3][8][18]

  5. Fourth generation (E46)

    1999–2006

Offered as a sedan, coupe, convertible and Touring wagon, built in Germany and South Africa, with all-wheel drive returning to the 3 Series as the 325xi and 330xi. For 2006 BMW Canada moved the sedan to the E90 but kept the E46 coupe, convertible and M3 on sale.[2][13]

Common issues

Problems a source documents for this model, tagged by what kind of source it is. What each tag means:

Recall
A safety recall. Transport Canada’s list further down has the recall itself, and a dealer can tell you from your VIN whether it applies to your vehicle.
Owner complaint pattern
Owners have reported it in complaints. A pattern in reports is not a recall, and not a finding that every vehicle has the problem.
Documented
Documented by the sources cited, such as a manufacturer program, a court-approved settlement or a reputable publication.
  • Takata airbag inflators on the E46 (do not drive until repaired)

    Recall Model years 2000–2006

Takata inflators in 2000 to 2006 E46 cars can rupture in a crash as the propellant ages. In May 2023 BMW Canada issued a do-not-drive order for about 38,000 unrepaired E46 3 Series and other models, and Transport Canada recalls 2015-230 and 2014-299 cover the driver and passenger airbags; a used E46 should come with proof the work was done.[14][30][31]

  • Driver airbag inflator on the E90 generation

    Recall Model years 2006–2013

Transport Canada recall 2016-142 replaced the driver-front airbag inflator or module on over 100,000 BMWs including the E90 family, because the inflator could rupture. A later recall (2024-392) covers cars fitted with a replacement sport or M Sport steering wheel that carries a Takata airbag.[32][33]

  • N52 crankcase ventilation (PCV) heater fire risk

    Recall Model years 2006–2013

On cars with the N52 six-cylinder, the PCV valve heater can short circuit and overheat, even with the car parked and off. Transport Canada recall 2022-095 installs a wiring repair kit, and BMW advised parking outdoors until it is done.[34]

  • Blower fan regulator wiring can overheat

    Recall Model years 2006–2011

The crimp connection in the blower regulator harness can corrode and, at high fan speed, overheat and melt. Transport Canada recall 2017-588 replaces the harness; it matters in Calgary, where the heater fan runs hard for much of the year.[3][35]

  • N54 high-pressure fuel pump failures (335i)

Owner complaint pattern Model years 2007–2010

Owners of 2007 and 2008 3 Series have filed more than 100 NHTSA complaints about high-pressure fuel pump failure on the twin-turbo 335i, with reduced power or sudden stalling. BMW extended the pump warranty to 10 years in the United States after a class action, but that extension did not apply in Canada.[8][41][42]

  • N20 timing chain wear

    Documented Model years 2012–2015

Class actions in the US and Canada allege that the timing chain system of the N20 2.0 L turbo four in 2012 to 2015 models wears prematurely and can destroy the engine if a chain guide fails. The Canadian case, filed in 2017, is still before the courts; an N20 with a noisy timing chain should be checked promptly.[10][29]

  • Electric water pump connector short circuit

    Recall Model years 2012–2016

Transport Canada recall 2024-468 covers about 78,000 BMWs in which crankcase-ventilation fluid can leak into the electric water pump connector and short it, a fire risk even with the car off. Dealers inspect and, if needed, replace the water pump and connector and add a shield; park outdoors until it is done.[36]

  • Starter overheating and fire risk on the G20

    Recall Model years 2020–2024

Transport Canada recalls 2024-444, 2026-040 and 2026-331 cover G20 starters that can overheat, from repeated start attempts on 2020 cars and from a manufacturing fault on 2021 to 2024 cars. Until the repair is done BMW advises against using remote start or leaving the car idling unattended, which Calgary owners often do in winter.[37][38][39]

  • BMW Canada has leaned on xDrive: for 2006 it added the 325xi, 330xi and 325xi Touring, from 2016 the non-hybrid four-cylinder F30 models were xDrive only, and since 2019 every regular gasoline 3 Series has been xDrive.[13][21][24][27]
  • The announced 2027 lineup keeps xDrive standard on both gasoline models, the 330 xDrive and the M350 xDrive.[15]
  • The E46 Performance Package known in the US by order code ZHP used order code ZAM in Canada.[2]
  • Canada got diesel 3 Series cars twice, the 335d sedan for 2009 to 2011 and the 328d xDrive sedan and Touring for 2014 to 2018; the 328d is covered by Transport Canada recall 2021-711 for an EGR cooler that can crack and cause an engine fire.[16][17][19][23][40]
