How do I check if my vehicle has an open recall in Canada?
Enter your VIN in your manufacturer’s recall lookup, or call its recall line; this page links both for the major makes. Transport Canada’s database lists recalls by model and model year, not by VIN, and so does this tool.
What does “units affected” mean?
It is the number of vehicles in Canada the recall covers, as Transport Canada’s database records it, counted across every model and model year the recall names, not only the one you searched for.
Why do the Canadian and U.S. recall lists differ?
A manufacturer reports a recall to each government separately, so the numbers, dates and vehicle counts differ, and a recall in one country may not reach vehicles sold in the other. The U.S. list from NHTSA is shown for comparison; for a vehicle sold in Canada, Transport Canada’s list is the one to go by.
How current is the recall list?
Each search reads Transport Canada’s database at the time and keeps the answer for up to six hours. The table of popular models on this page is a snapshot, and says the date it was read.
